LYNCHBURG, Va. – Top-seeded Shenandoah University ended No. 4 Virginia Wesleyan's baseball season Sunday with a 4-1 win over the Marlins in the opening game of day three of the 2017 ODAC Baseball Tournament.

Shenandoah (36-7) advances to tonight's 6 p.m. game against Washington and Lee. The winner of that game advances into Monday's championship contest.

If its SU in the championship, the game would begin at approximately 3:30. If its W&L, the Generals would have the first of two opportunities to win beginning with an 11 a.m. contest.

Junior Michael Bugonowicz (6-1) threw 8 2/3 innings Sunday morning, striking out nine allowing only an unearned run on four hits, before turning it over to Tyler Hott for the final out of the contest.

Hott earned his program-record-tying ninth save of the season with a seven-pitch at-bat to Justin Erby. Erby fouled off five consecutive pitches before grounding out to end the game.

Hott's ninth save ties the record set by Scott Gray in 1991.

The Hornets offense banged out 10 hits in the win with five of them coming in a four-run sixth. SU sent all nine men to the plate in the frame with Abel Arocho and Nick Goode contributing consecutive RBI triples to give Bugonowicz all of the offense he would need.

Jake Loew brought home Goode with a sacrifice fly to center before Donnie Forgacs closed out the scoring with an RBI single to right center.

Forgacs plated Nate Loman, who reached on a two-out single through the left side.

The offense was more than enough for Bugonowicz, who faced the minimum in the first, third, fifth, seventh and eighth innings. All four hits allowed were singles and he worked out of bases loaded jams in the fourth and sixth.

Loman and Robert Marcelle each had two hits in the win.
