The Oglethorpe baseball team suffered their first loss of the season Tuesday afternoon, as they fell 13-1 to crosstown rival Emory at the Eagles' Chappell Park. The result dropped the Stormy Petrels to 3-1 on the season.

The Petrels got off to an excellent start in the first inning, as senior center fielder tripled off the right field wall with one out and was driven home by a sacrifice fly from senior right fielder Adrian Celata. The Eagles responded in the bottom half of the inning, however, scoring nine runs off Petrel starter Matt Davis. Davis suffered the loss on the day, allowing those nine runs on seven hits over an inning of work.

Emory proceeded to add to their lead over the middle innings, scoring three in the fifth and a single run in the seventh.

Oglethorpe knocked seven hits and drew four walks in the contest, but were unable to cut any more runs across against the Emory pitching staff. The Petrels left 10 men on base.

Freshman right-hander Alex Smith served as a bright spot on the mound for the Petrels, allowing no runs on five hits through three innings of relief work. Miller finished the game 2-for-3 with a double, a walk and a run scored.

"Today just wasn't our day," said Oglethorpe head coach Dan Giordano. "Give credit to Emory, who took some really good swings. We had chances to make some plays and knock in some runs, but we didn't get it done today. We'll look to bounce back this weekend."

The Petrels are scheduled to be back in action this weekend, as they welcome MacMurray to Anderson Field for a 3-game set this weekend. Saturday's doubleheader will get underway at 2 p.m. and Sunday's single game is scheduled for a noon first pitch. After that, they'll go on the road to take on Piedmont Feb. 20 at 5 p.m.
