Averett Squeaks By Guilford For 6-5 Baseball Win

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- BK Stancil had three hits and scored the game-winning run in the eighth inning as visiting Averett University defeated Guilford College, 6-5, at McBane Field on Wednesday.

Stancil hit 3-5 and had three RBI for the Cougars. Teammate Dallas Smith was 3-4, had two RBI, two stolen and was the winning pitcher for Averett (1-2).

Josh Shepherd went 2-4 with a double to lead Guilford's offense. Mitchell Stumpo (0-2) tossed the final two frames for the Quakers and took the loss.

In the top of the eighth, Stancil singled to lead off the inning. He was bunted to second base and moved to third on a groundout. Bradley Tickle's single up the middle scored Stancil for the decisive run.

Smithers began the game in right field but was sent to the mound in the bottom of the seventh inning. He allowed no hits, one walk and improved to 1-0 on the season. 

Ty Walser started for Guilford. He pitched four innings, allowed two runs, struck out four and allowed no walks.

Guilford trailed, 3-0, heading to the bottom of the fifth inning before chasing Averett starter Dillon Touchard after plating three runs to tie the contest. The inning was highlighted by a Zach Dinkins RBI double, followed by a two-run single by Brett Shapcott. 

The Quakers (0-2) play at William Peace University Friday (2/17) night in the first of a three-game series against the Pacers.
