CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Spalding baseball team opened the season with bang routing Sewanee, 14-1, on opening day at McCallie School in Chattanooga, Tenn.  

THE BASICS

SCORE: Spalding 14 – Sewanee 1

RECORDS: Spalding 1-0, Sewanee 1-3

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Golden Eagles got on the scoreboard in the first inning tallying the first run of the season on a Dillon Sievert home run to left field.
  • The score remained 1-0 until the third inning, when Spalding's bats lit up the scoreboard for six runs. Senior Clay Kelly doubled down the left field line driving in Sievert from second. Joe Hatcher followed with a three-run bomb over the left field wall to clear the bases. Kyle Stevens and Evan Trentman drove in the final two runs of the inning, both on sacrifice flies to center field.
  • Quenton Brownlee launched a solo bomb over the left field wall to extend SU's lead to 9-1. Brownlee drove in two additional runs in the eighth inning with a single through the left side scoring Hatcher and Blake Benz.
  • The Golden Eagles added five more runs in the eighth to make the final score, 14-1. Sievert scored on a wild pitch, followed by a Benz single through the right side driving in Matt Harper for the first two runs, and Benz came home on a Brownlee single to left. Ian Woodall and Garrett Wilson drove in the final two runs on a pair of singles scoring Hatcher and Brownlee.

 STAT LEADERS

  • Jimi Keating (1-0) earned the win, pitching 7.0 innings, allowing one run (unearned), on four hits, while striking out eight batters and walking one.
  • Joe Hatcher batted-in a team-best three runs going 2-for-5 at the plate.
  • Quenton Brownlee went 2-for-4 with a two runs batted-in and a solo home run.
  • Dillon Sievert went 3-for-6 with a solo home run.

FOR THE FOES

  • Josh Roberts went 2-for-2 driving in the Tigers sole RBI.
  • Harrison Lee (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing seven runs, on eight hits, in 2.0 innings pitched.

UP NEXT

  • The Golden Eagles complete the series against Sewanee Sunday, February 18. Game one of the double header is scheduled for 11:00 am EST, directly followed by game two to wrap up the series.
