Three runs on three hits in the 10th inning led the visiting Pacific University baseball team to a 10-8 win over host Whitman on Sunday in Walla Walla, Washington.
The Boxers (7-4, 3-0) pulled off the series sweep with its second-straight, extra-inning win and extended its winning streak to seven. The series sweep over the Blues is its first since the 2015 season.
Pacific had 13 hits for its fourth double-digit hit game of the young season. Five-different Boxers had two hits, including its one-two punch at the top of the order in Derek Legeza (Peoria, Ariz.) and Dylan Wright (Gilbert, Ariz.). Both Legeza and Dylan Wright each had two RBI in the win.
With the bases loaded in the 10th, Legeza singled in fellow freshman Chase Anderson (Federal Way, Wash.) and junior Dustin Meyer (Silverton, Ore.), who each singled to start the inning. Later in the inning, the Boxers picked up another run on a freshman Max Nealon (Redmond, Wash.) sacrifice fly.
The Blues mounted a threat in its half of the 10th before the Boxers' senior Matt Jensen (Montesano, Wash.) closed out the win with a ground out for his first save of the season. Junior Sam Lawrence (Sammanish, Wash.) picked up the win, pitching 3.2 innings of relief and striking out two to improve to 2-0.
The Blues (3-8, 0-3) had 11 hits, including three players with two hits apiece. Lucas Thurn was one of the three with multiple hits including his second home run of the season as he also drove in a game-high four runs.
Whitman overcame a 4-1 deficit to take a 5-4 lead, scoring twice in the seventh. The Boxers regained the lead, scoring three times in the top of the eighth for a 7-5 advantage. Two of the runs came in on a two-RBI double by Dylan Wright. The Blues came back with two in its half of the eighth to tie the game at 8.
After each team was kept off the scoreboard in the ninth, the contest moved into extra innings. It was the second straight game between the two teams that was going to be decided in extra innings.
