Pitching Leads Cougars To Win Over Concordia-Texas

More news about: Concordia-Chicago

Sauget, Ill. – After a rough ending to opening day yesterday, the Concordia University Chicago Cougars took to the field again under beautiful blue skies at GCS Credit Union Ballpark. Their first opponent of the day would be the Concordia University Texas Tornados. CUC used two runs in the fourth inning along with stellar pitching to secure their first win of the season 2-0.

For the Cougars (1-1), Adam Gregory was impressive in his Cougar debut, going seven strong innings, allowing no runs and just three hits while striking out six. Mike Formella came in and shut the door on the Tornados working perfectly through the eighth and ninth for his first save. Joe Silvascored the winning run and went 1-3 on the day for CUC.

For the Tornados (6-5) starting pitcher Matthew Williams pitched well, allowing two unearned runs over seven innings while striking out seven. Ryan Clouse had two of the three hits on the day for CUTX.

Both starting pitchers came out strong over the first two innings allowing just one hit. Concordia-Texas threatened in the third inning, loading the bases on two hits and a walk. Gregory was able to escape the trouble by inducing a ground out to Bryan VanDuser.

The Cougars were finally able to break through in the fourth inning. Silva led off with a single to right field, and quickly advanced to second on a wild pitch. One out later, Mitch Wilson followed by working a full count walk. With two outs, a high fly ball off the bat of Keegan Tyrell was misplayed by the right fielder allowing Silva to score and Wilson to advance to third. CUC then executed a perfect steal and stop, allowing Wilson to steal home to make it 2-0 Cougars.

Gregory continued to roll through the CUTX lineup, giving way to Formella in the eighth. Formella followed suit by retiring all six batters he faced.

The Cougars will conclude their opening weekend later today against the host Webster University. First pitch is set for 4:00pm.
