RAMAPO OPENS UP 2018 SEASON WITH 3-1 WIN OVER SUSQUEHANNA

Union, NJ: The Ramapo College baseball team opened the 2018 season with a 3-1 win over Susquehanna University today at Kean University in non-conference action. The River Hawks fall to 0-5 overall.

Ramapo got on the board in the bottom of the second inning when Matt Chemis came up big with two outs as he knocked home Anthony Rocchietti and Vincenzo Sita who reach base on a walk and intentional walk earlier in the inning for a 2-0 lead.

Susquehanna cut the lead to one with a run in the top of the third inning. Following a walk to Luke Tuttle, Craig Roumes laced a double down the left field line putting runners on second and third with one out. Ryan Casey then poked a single into left field platting Tuttle to on the board 2-1. Ramapo starting pitcher Jerry D'Andrea then induced back-to-back strikeouts, both looking to end the inning.

Joe Maugeri led off the bottom of the eighth with a triple in the right-center field gap before he later scored on an infield fielding error to extend the Roadrunner lead 3-1. Kevin Foulds took over on the mound in relief and struck out the side in the top of the ninth inning to preserve Ramapo's season opener 3-1 win.

D'Andrea (1-0) worked eight innings in the win with eight strikeouts as he scattered six hits and walked two. Kevin Foulds earned the save in the ninth inning as he struck out all three batters he faced. Maugeri led the Roadrunners offensively as he was 2-4 at the plate with one run scored while Chemis finished 1-3 with two RBI.

Bobby Grigas scattered five hits over seven innings of work for the River Hawks while he recorded four strikeouts and four walks. Sean Rodriguez worked the final inning for Susquehanna surrendering two hits and one run. Ryan Casey finished 2-4 with one RBI for the River Hawks.

The Roadrunners, who received votes in the latest D3baseball.com Top 25 Poll, return to action tomorrow afternoon when they host Westfield State University in two seven-inning games at Diamond Nation in Flemington, NJ starting at 1pm.
