Auburndale, FL --- Junior Steven Gallagher (Coventry, RI) connected on a two-run shot in the fourth inning of the nightcap as WPI split a baseball doubleheader with Coe (IA) in the team's delayed season opener. The Koehawks won the first 4-3 and the Engineers claimed the second 11-5.

At the time, Gallagher made it a 7-3 game in favor of the Engineers. WPI added on four more in the sixth as senior Matt Howard (Worcester, MA) doubled in a pair and scored on a miscue before sophomore David Larson (Port Tobacco, MD) clubbed an RBI double to left center.

Coe collected two runs in the seventh for the 11-5 final.

Each side plated an unearned run in the first. Gallagher evened it at 2-2 with an RBI single and put the Boynton Hillers ahead for good when he touched home following a wild pitch in the third. Larson followed with an RBI double and junior Josh Herlands (Glastonbury, CT) added a run-producing single to complete the four-run frame.

Howard batted 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, RBI and runs scored. Larson (2 doubles, 2 RBI), Gallagher (HR, 3 RBI, 3 runs) and junior Ryan Tropeano (Pembroke, MA) logged two hits apiece.

Junior Doug Rives (Bethany, CT) struck out three in the win while sophomore Nick Colucci (Lynnfield, MA) set down two and graduate student Sean Fallon (Westwood, MA) fanned one in an inning of relief each.

Larson's first double of the day produced an early 2-0 lead in the opener. Coe scored the next four while junior Austin Lindner (W. Windsor, NJ) made it a one-run contest courtesy of a wild pitch in the seventh.

Lindner and senior Evan Lacroix (Methuen, MA) each went 2-for-3 in the effort. Classmate Steven D'Agostino (Worcester, MA) struck out seven in 5 1/3 while sophomore Nick Tagaris (New City, NY) finished the frame.

The Engineers face Gwynedd Mercy (PA) at 10:30am and DeSales (PA) at 1:30pm tomorrow.
