Washington, PA – The Oberlin College baseball team earned a split with No. 3 Washington & Jefferson, taking game one 5-4 before dropping the nightcap 5-1.
 
The Yeomen head into their annual spring break trip with a record of 2-4 after earning back-to-back splits with the Presidents and Knights of Calvin College. W&J, which received two first-place votes in the latest D3baseball.com Top 25 Poll, is now 4-2 on the season.
 
Senior Sean Kiley earned his first win of the season as he was masterful through the front five innings, surrendering just two hits and three walks over 101 pitches of work. The Studio City, California, native racked up eight strikeouts to run his season punch-out total to 25 through three starts on the year.
 
The Yeomen plated a pair of runs in the top of the third inning. Senior Jack McGowan got things going with a single through the right side and after stealing second, he would come around to score on a single to centerfield by sophomore Amari Newman. Senior Quin Butler would then follow with a two-out run-scoring single to center.
 
Oberlin would break the game open with three runs in the sixth, all of which came with two outs. The Yeomen used four hits and an error in the inning to take a 5-0 lead.  Milo Sklar started the rally with a hit to left field and he would come around to score a single to left by catcher Brendan Mapes. Derek Martin kept the train moving with an RBI single to right field, before freshman Lawrence Hamilton delivered his first-career hit with a run-producing double to the gap in right center that sent Mapes across the dish for what ultimately proved to be a big insurance tally.
 
Sklar came on in relief of Kiley in the sixth and got through the inning and the seventh with no trouble. W&J would scratch out its first run of the game in the eighth, but things got dicey for the Yeomen sidearmer in the ninth. The Presidents' comeback bid started with a four-pitch leadoff walk. Luke Zahren would then register an RBI and Dan Trettel would come through with a two-out two-run single back up the box to cut the Yeomen lead down to just one as he represented the would-be game-winning run. However, Sklar was able to preserve the win as Mark Merlino went first-pitch swinging and hit a slow roller back to Sklar for the game's final out.
 
The save for Sklar marked his first of the season and ran his school-best career total to 14.
 
Oberlin managed just three hits in game two as W&J senior Bryce Schnatterly kept the Yeomen bats at bay in the complete-game victory.
 
Yeomen southpaw starter David Gaetano lasted 1.2 innings as the Presidents touched him up for four runs on five hits and two walks. However, the Yeomen bullpen was sharp the rest of the way as the grouping of Noah Gear (2.1 ip), Zachary Steer (1 ip), Musa Matiwane (1 ip), Alexander Amorello (1 ip) and Stephen Kellner (1 ip) combined to allow just three hits and one run the rest of the way.
 
The Presidents posted four runs in the second and added a single tally in the fourth.
 
First-year Alexis Castillo broke-up Schnatterly's no-hit bid with a single in the fifth. The Yeomen's lone run of the game came on solo shot over the wall in left by Butler. It was his first home run of the season and fourth of his career.
 
Oberlin will open its 10-game spring break trip in Tucson, Arizona next Saturday with a traditional 7-inning doubleheader against Saint John's University (Minn.) at Veterans Memorial Stadium. First pitch of game one is set for 3 p.m. MST / 6 p.m. EDT.
