Bison get back on track with 14-6 win

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Nichols College baseball team got back in the win column with a 14-6 victory over Fitchburg State University on Tuesday morning in Auburndale, Fla.
 
The Bison improve to 2-5 overall and return to action on Wednesday afternoon when they take on Amherst at 4:00 p.m. in Port Charlotte, Fla. Fitchburg State drops to 3-2 with the setback.
 
Nichols recorded season-highs in both runs (14) and hits (20) in the game, including an eight-run fifth inning that helped the Bison rally from a 4-2 deficit to a 10-4 lead. The team would add single runs in both the sixth and seventh innings before tacking on a pair of runs in the eighth.
 
Six different players recorded multi-hit days, with four players registering three hits. Senior Nick Roy and freshman Nathaniel Cormier each went 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI, while Roy scored three runs and stole two bases and Cormier crossed the plate twice. Senior Cam Cook went 3-for-6 with two runs scored and an RBI, with senior Chris Anderson adding a 3-for-4 game with two runs scored an RBI.
 
Sophomore Kyle Bouchard added a 2-for-4 day with two RBI and a run scored, while junior Joe Assenza went 2-for-4 with an RBI, two stolen bases, and a run scored. Sophomore Christian Naccari rounded out the multi-hit games going 2-for-5 with an RBI, while freshman Alexander Stroshine drove in four runs and scored twice while going 1-for-5.
 
Freshman Justin Hurley picked up his first career win in relief of classmate Dario Tarquinio, tossing three innings and giving up one unearned run on three hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Tarquinio earned a no decision as he lasted 4.0 innings and allowed four runs (three earned) on nine hits with a pair of walks and one strikeout. Sophomore Brodie Altiere went the final two innings and allowed one unearned run on three hits with a strikeout.
 
Nichols scored first to start the game as Bouchard drove in Roy with a sacrifice fly to put the Bison in front 1-0. Fitchburg State eventually took a 2-1 lead with runs in the first and second innings before an RBI groundout from Stroshine knotted the game at 2-2.
 
The Falcons took a 4-2 lead in the fourth inning on RBI singles by freshman Camden Santos and classmate Nicholas Cordeau.
 
The Nichols offense then exploded in the top of the fifth, plating eight runs to pull away for the 10-2 advantage. Bouchard and Cook picked up RBI doubles in the inning, with Cormier, Roy, and Naccari also driving in runs. Assenza extended the lead to 11-4 with an RBI single in the sixth.

Fitchburg State would score runs in the sixth and ninth inning, but never really threatened as the Bison continued to tack on runs and cruise to the 14-6 victory.

Monday marked the 34th meeting between the two programs, and Nichols leads the all-time series 22-12 including three-straight victories.
