Strong Pitching Propels Hamline Past Dubuque

Nolan Schoonveld and Zach Smith held  Dubuque's bats to just six hits as the Piper baseball team opened its Tucson trip with a solid 5-2 victory Friday. Schoonveld improved his record to 2-0 with five innings of one run, four hit ball. Smith (pictured) followed with a rare four-inning save, giving up just one run on two hits.

Meanwhile, the Pipers (3-4) warmed up to the Arizona sun with a dozen hits. Mitch Benson went 3-for-3 with a run scored and a RBI. Jeremy Szura was 2-for-5 with a run and a RBI and Elliott Engen knocked in two runs to pace the offense. 

Schoonveld led off the HU first with a single. Szura followed with a double that scored Schoonvelkd and got the Pipers on their way. Szura later scored on Engen's sacrifice fly. The Spartans halved the margin only to see the Pipers score twice in the fifth frame and add another run in the seventh. The arms did the rest of the work to finish this first of an eight game week long western swing. 

Hamline plays two nine-inning games Saturday, March 17 against Greenville and Wesleyan.
