PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla.—Junior pitcher Dakota McFadden did it with his arm and his bat in leading Keystone College to a 13-8 victory over SUNY Canton Friday afternoon.
McFadden picked up his second win of the season by striking out five in 6.2 innings and drove in five runs with a pair of doubles as the Giants evened their record at 5-5. Sophomore Adam Kelly hit a three-run home run and junior Mohammed Hussein belted a pair of doubles for Keystone, which tied its season-high with nine hits while establishing a new season-high in runs.
Keystone jumped out to a 10-0 lead after the first two innings, as McFadden and junior Ronald Medina hit sacrifice flies and senior Bray Curreri followed with a run-scoring single in first inning and McFadden knocked in three runs with a double in the second. Kelly followed moments with a three-run home run, his team-leading second run of the season, as part of a seven-run rally.
After SUNY Canton scored five runs in the fourth, the Giants added two more runs in the top of the fifth and another one in the seventh to keep their lead safely at hand.
And even though McFadden was touched up for nine hits and seven earned runs, his performance today marks the fifth straight game that a Giant hurler has gone at least 6 and 2/3 innings.
Juniors Colin Lynk and Brian Santana had two hits and drove in two runs apiece for SUNY Canton, now 2-7. Junior Ben Miller knocked in two runs with a double during a three-run rally in the bottom of the seventh.
Although not credited with a save, senior reliever Emilio Gonzalez-De Olio pitched two scoreless innings, struck out three, and allowed just one hit for Keystone, which will play Adrian College later this afternoon before closing out an 8-game Spring Break trip against North Central College (Illinois) tomorrow at 12:00 p.m.
