Hilyard effort sends Spartans past Wabash

CRAWFORDSVILLE, IND. – Junior shortstop Braxton Riley (Fort Wayne, Ind.) doubled, tripled and drove in three runs, and catcher Matt Pritz (LaPorte, Ind.), also a member of the Class of 2019, added three hits and two RBI to lead Manchester University past Wabash College in game one of a non-conference doubleheader Monday, March 19.

Coach Rick Espeset's offense didn't stop there against their North Coast Athletic Conference foes. Sophomore first baseman Nick Rush (Terre Haute, Ind.), continuing a stellar start to 2018, registered two hits and scored three times as part of a dominating 9-2 win at Goodrich Park on WC's campus. Those totals were more than enough to aid junior pitcher Jordan Hilyard (Decatur, Ind.).

For a second straight start, he compiled a complete-game victory, limiting the Little Giants to only the two earned runs while striking out five and only allowing one free pass. Embroiled in a nip-and-tuck 2-1 contest through five innings, the offense answered with seven runs over its final four dish opportunities.

MU (7-7) was on the verge of a sweep, holding a 4-3 lead in the seventh of game two before more tough-luck defense raised its head. Four errors allowed Wabash to plate a deciding seven-run comeback in route to a 10-5 victory. Riley, Rush and senior third baseman Hunter Lane (Nappanee, Ind.) each tallied two-hit resumes in the nightcap.

The Spartans continue their spring break hosting Calvin College of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Thursday, March 22. First pitch at Gratz Field is 1 p.m.
