Keuka College Baseball Swept in Florida Opener

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — The Keuka College Baseball team lost a pair of games to Bowdoin College on Thursday on the first day of their spring break trip to Florida.

The Wolves lost to the Polar Bears 10-2 in the opener. Bowdoin then defeated Keuka College (1-3) 10-1 in the nightcap for the sweep.

Tyler Krowiak (Endwell, N.Y. / Seton Catholic) and John Rizzo (Auburn, N.Y. / Auburn) each had two hits on the day for Keuka.

The Wolves struck early in the first game against the Polar Bears. Rizzo walked and advanced to third on a single by Krowiak with two outs. Brooks Vertoske (Horseheads, N.Y. / Horseheads) reached on an error to score Rizzo. Tyler Krowiak then came around to score on an RBI single by Sean Sheets (Manchester, N.Y. / Red Jacket) to make it 2-0 Keuka.

Bowdoin responded in the second with a run. Keuka had a chance to add to the lead in the third. They loaded the bases with one out, but left all three stranded. In the following frame, Bowdoin scored four runs to take the lead. They then added two in the fifth and sixth and a single run in the seventh as the Polar Bears defeated the Wolves 10-2.

Lead Wolf: Tyler Krowiak went 2-3 at the plate for the Wolves with a pair of singles. The junior designated hitter also scored one of Keuka's two runs in the game.

Bowdoin College jumped out on Keuka with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. Starting pitcher Wyatt Conklin (Bloomfield, N.Y. / Bloomfield) rebounded in the second for Keuka, striking out the side with each batter going down looking. He added two more strikeouts in the third and another in the fourth.

The Keuka College offense struggled in Game 2, totaling just two hits in the game. The Green and Gold got on the board in the sixth inning as Alec Bowie (Sparta, N.J. / Sparta) led off with a double and scored on a Dakota Skinner (Waverly, N.Y. / Tioga) to make it 4-1 Bowdoin. The Polar Bears had an answer in the bottom of the sixth as they plated six runs. Bowdoin closed it out in the top of the seventh to defeat Keuka College 10-1 and sweep the shutout.

Lead Wolf: Wyatt Conklin went 5.1 innings for Keuka College on the mound. The sophomore struck out a career-high eight batters.

  • Keuka College is now 0-4 all-time against Bowdoin College as the Polar Bears swept Keuka in their Florida doubleheader last season as well
  • Freshmen Adam Maurer (Warsaw, N.Y. / Warsaw) and Sean Sheets each got their first collegiate hit on Thursday

Up Next for Keuka College: The Wolves will continue their Florida trip on Friday with a pair of games against Juniata College. The doubleheader will be the first ever meeting between the two schools.
