Wolves Split with Mules in Florida

AUBURNDALE, Fla. — The Keuka College Baseball team split with Colby College in Florida on Saturday. The Wolves lost to the Mules 13-4, but rallied for the win in Game 2, 5-2.

Senior Dakota Skinner (Waverly, N.Y. Tioga) had three hits on the day for Keuka College (4-4). Bryan Johnsen (Otisville, N.Y. / Minisink Valley) earned the win on the mound in Game 2. He threw four shutout innings with five strikeouts and just three hits.

Colby College 13 vs. Keuka College 4

The Mules jumped ahead of the Wolves quickly in Game 1. They scored two in the first and four in the second for the 6-0 lead. Keuka got three back in the bottom of the second as a pair scored on an error by Colby. Jake Redding (Victor, N.Y. / Victor) plate the third run on a fielder's choice to make it 6-3.

Colby responded with a run in the top of the third and six in the fourth to take a ten-run lead, 13-3. Adam Maurer (Warsaw, N.Y. / Warsaw) had an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth to make it 13-4, but that score would hold as Colby won Game 1.

Lead Wolf: Kyle Colegrove (Elkland, Pa. / Williamson) doubled for Keuka College against the Mules. He also walked in the game and scored a pair of runs.

Keuka College 5 vs. Colby College 2

It was Keuka's turn to take the early lead. John Rizzo (Auburn, N.Y. / Auburn) led off on a single and scored on a groundout by Dan Bamann (Rochester, N.Y. / Irondequoit).

Keuka added to their lead in the fourth. They plated one run on a groundout. Then Dakota Skinner scored two on a single to make it 4-0 Wolves. Colby made it 4-2 in the bottom of the sixth, but Keuka added an insurance run in the seventh on an RBI single by Alec Bowie (Sparta, N.J. / Sparta). The lead was more than enough for Ryan Lawrence (Rochester, N.Y. / Brighton). The senior closed out the game with a perfect 1.1 innings to earn the save in a 5-2 victory.

Lead Wolf: After earning all-conference honors last season, Bryan Johnsen picked up where he left off in his first start of the season. Johnsen allowed just three hits and struck out five in the win.

KC Notes:

  • Keuka College is now 1-3 all-time against Colby College. All four meetings have come in Florida
  • Kevin Franz (Vestal, N.Y. / Vestal) came in relief of Johnsen in Game 2. It was his 37th career appearance, setting a new Keuka College record

Up Next for Keuka College: The Wolves have a day-off in Florida before a tough test on Monday. Keuka College will face nationally-ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater in a nine-inning game and then face Franklin College in a nine-inning game.
