Rhodes combines for 22 runs on Saturday to sweep the Birmingham-Southern series

Memphis - Rhodes College baseball tallied 22 runs and hit five home runs in their doubleheader sweep of conference foe Birmingham-Southern College Saturday afternoon. The Lynx defeated the Panthers 12-4 in game one and earned the series sweep on a 10-6 victory in game two. Rhodes is now 20-10 on the year and tops the Southern Athletic Association standings with a 12-3 league record.

On the Day
Junior Nick Bosma hit two home runs and earned his 10th save of the year. The Overland Park, Kan. native leads the nation in saves and leads all SAA players with 8 home runs on the year. Zac Lange also homered twice for the Lynx. Jacob Telli totaled five walks and scored six runs across both games while freshman Will Heurtin recorded seven runs batted in and went three-of-three in game two with a home run. The Lynx recorded 21 hits on Saturday and finished the series with 27 against the Panthers.

Game One
BSC led 2-1 before Rhodes tied the game in the bottom of the second and then went on to score four consecutive runs over the fourth and fifth innings. the Panthers earned a run in the sixth on a sac fly and one in the seventh on a single, but Rhodes scored two runs in each of their final three half-innings to earn the win. Bosma and Lange each homered once in the game. Rhodes' tallied four doubles, two of which came from Heurtin, one from Ryan Palermo and one from Telli. Trey Sledge got the start and pitched seven innings for his sixth win of the season. He added four strikeouts to his SAA-leading totals and now has 60 on the year. 

Game two
Heurtin recorded the first RBI of the game when Telli scored from second base on a single to right field. A double and sac fly allowed BSC to take a very brief lead in the third before Rhodes crossed four runs in the bottom half of the inning to lead 5-2. Three of those runs were scored on Heurtin's home run. Tyler Hamel answered with a two-run shot over the fence to cut Rhodes' lead to one in the fourth. With one out for the Panthers, Carter King came in to pitch and struck out the first batter he faced. Bosma entered the mound in the fifth with the Lynx still leading by just one run. 

Rhodes' offense came alive once again in the fifth as they scored five runs on three hits including home runs by Bosma (three-run) and Lange (solo). The first Lynx run of the inning was on a wild pitch. With one out in the seventh, the Panthers cut Rhodes' 10-4 lead with two runs on a single up the middle. 

John Medich started on the mound for the Lynx and struck out five batters in 3.1 innings of work.

Rhodes will play at Christian Brothers University on Tuesday, with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. The Lynx have a tough weekend ahead with road games at Berry beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 7 at 1 p.m. EST.
