Baseball Unable to Comeback in Late Rally vs. Ramapo

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime baseball team played host to the Ramapo Roadrunners in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday evening. The Privateers fell behind early and were unable to comeback and fell to the Roadrunners by a 9-4 score.
 
Eight different Privateers picked up hits on the night including a double off the bat of freshman Travis Zurita(Ozone Park, N.Y./Poly Prep). Freshman Adam Mosca(Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) had the biggest hit of the night for the Privateers with a two-run single. Sophomore Matt Lobello (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) also earned an RBI with a bases-loaded walk.
 
Sophomore Matthew Paghidas (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) got the start on the hill for the Privateers and went the first two innings. Sophomore Travis Bruinsma (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Connetquot) came on in relief and six outs, while freshman Kyle Peterson (Mohegan Lake, N.Y./Lakeland) pitched the next two innings. Junior Matthew Buckshaw (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot), junior Alex Poliwoda (Southold, N.Y./Southold) and sophomore Skylar Graff (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) finished off the game with one-inning outings apiece.
 
Ramapo jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a walk, a bunt single, a sacrifice fly and another single. The Roadrunners added six more runs in the top of the second inning before a fielder's choice ended the frame with Ramapo up by eight.
 
The Privateers got a run back in the bottom of the second as sophomore Jake Vera (Plainview, N.Y./Bethpage) led off with a single, followed by a groundout to move him into scoring position. Sophomore Antonio Diaz (Freeport, N.Y./Freeport) walked, and as he stole second Vera followed with a steal of home to give Maritime their first run of the contest.
 
Bruinsma came on in the top of the third and yielded a home run before getting out of the inning with a double play turned behind him. Bruinsma struck out the final batter he faced in the top of the fourth inning to keep the Roadrunners in check. Peterson came on struck out five batters in his outing to send the game to the seventh inning.
 
Buckshaw came on to start the seventh inning and got the three batters in order including one strikeout during his outing.
 
In the bottom of the seventh freshman Shane Sullivan (Stewart Manor, N.Y./Chaminade) led off with a walked and then stole second. Mosca walked before senior Matt Costleigh (West Islip, N.Y./St. Anthony's)singled on a bunt to load the bases. Two batters later Lobello walked to pick up an RBI before the Privateers were retired on a double play turned by Ramapo.
 
Poliwoda held the Roadrunners at bay in the eighth inning, allowing just a two-out walk. The bottom of the inning saw freshman Zach Baber (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem) and Zurita reach base before the pair stole second and third on a double steal. Three batters later Mosca singled to centerfield to plate the pair and pull Maritime back within five at 9-4.
 
After Graff got through the ninth inning with an outfield assist to end the inning, Maritime's bats were unable to get going in the bottom half of the inning as the Roadrunners held on for the win.
 
Maritime (9-5, 2-0 Skyline) is currently scheduled to play next on Saturday, when the Privateers are to host Purchase for a Skyline Conference doubleheader beginning at 12:30 p.m. on the Reinhart Baseball Field.
 
Ramapo (9-5) will host Ursinus on Sunday, March 25 for a non-conference doubleheader at home in Mahwah, New Jersey.
