Privateers Sweep Bearcats; Toss Combined One-Hitter in Game Two

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – Maritime picked up a two-game sweep over Baruch on a chilly Sunday afternoon at Reinhart Baseball field. The Privateers won game one 7-1 and they won game two by a score of 2-0.
 
Maritime was led by junior Joe Scerra (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) and freshman Travis Zurita(Ozone Park, N.Y./Poly Prep) who each had three hits on the day. Scerra was three for six and Zurita was three for seven with 3 doubles and one RBI. Senior Connor Alwan(Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) had a team-high four RBIs while also hitting a double and scoring two runs.
 
Senior Chris Deddo (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) also had an RBI and walked twice. Deddo, senior Matt Costleigh (West Islip, N.Y./St. Anthony's), sophomore Antonio Diaz (Freeport, N.Y./Freeport) and sophomore Jake Vera (Plainview, N.Y./Bethpage) each had one hit on the day.
 
Maritime sent senior Anthony D'Ancona (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) to the mound for game one. D'Ancona went the distance while striking out seven batters and allowing just three hits.
 
In game two freshman southpaw Dylan Clausen (Southold, N.Y./Southold) got the start and completed 4 1/3 innings while fanning nine batters. Junior A.J. Ammirati (Queens, N.Y./Construction) came in in relief picking up the save while striking out four batters in 2 2/3 innings of work.
 
Game 1 Recap
Maritime got on the board first with an RBI single to center from sophomore Phil Russo (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) in the third inning, scoring Costleigh and putting the Privateers up 1-0. Next inning Maritime scored one more run thanks to Alwan's single to right field scoring Zurita, making the score 2-0.
 
The Privateers extended their lead with a big five run fifth inning. Vera was hit by a pitch and then Zurita reached on a throwing error by the third baseman making it runners on first and second. Next up was Diaz reached on an error by the second baseman allowing Vera to score while Zurita moved to second. Diaz and Zurita both stole to move up one base and then freshman Shane Sullivan (Stewart Manor, N.Y./Chaminade) walked to load the bases.
 
After a pitching change for Baruch, Alwan recorded a bases clearing double to extend the Maritime lead to six. Alwan scored later in the inning off an error to make the score 7-0.
 
Baruch pushed across one run in the sixth inning after a bases loaded hit by pitch. Maritime went on to win by a final score of 7-1.
 
Game 2 Recap
The second game was a pitcher's duel as both starting pitchers combined to allow five hits. Clausen walked the first three batters of the game but recovered by striking out the next three batters to get out of the jam. He struck out the side in the second and had two strikeouts in the third inning.
 
Maritime scored first in third inning thanks to an RBI double down the left field line from Zurita, allowing Russo to score on the play.
 
Clausen made it into the fifth inning but was relieved by Ammirati with one out as Clausen did not allow a hit on the afternoon. Ammirati retired the first batter and struck out the second to get out of the inning leaving two runners on base and preserving the no-hitter.
 
Maritime pushed across one more run in the sixth inning. Alwan got things started with a leadoff walk. He followed that by stealing second and then moving to third on an bunt single by Scerra. Afterwards Scerra stole second to make it second and third with Deddo at the plate. Deddo singled to center to get that one insurance run for the Privateers.
 
Baruch erased the no-hitter with two-out single to center. Ammirati struck out the next batter to complete the two-game sweep, winning by a final score of 2-0.
