The University of Scranton baseball team scored in six of the eight innings it came to bat and turned four double plays in the field en route to a 10-7 win over DeSales on Wednesday night at Volpe Field.

The Royals (9-9) held off DeSales after taking a 5-1 lead after four innings. The Bulldogs eventually pulled within 7-6 after scoring three times in the top of the seventh, but the Royals scored once in the seventh and twice in the eighth to negate a DeSales run in the eighth.

Sophomore first baseman Kevin Haag (Ossining, N.Y./Ossining/Bridgton Academy) led the offense with two singles, a double, three RBIs and two runs scored. Senior center fielder Tommy Trotter (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) doubled twice and scored three times.

Freshman third baseman Jarod Herman (Bethlehem, Pa./Notre Dame-Easton) singled twice, doubled, drove in two and scored a run. Sophomore left fielder Brandon Peters (Peckville, Pa./Valley View) added a two-run double, and senior catcher Kevin Nolan (Ossining, N.Y./Fordham Prep) and senior designated hitter Seth Bower (Newtown Square, Pa./Marple Newtown) had RBIs.

Senior shortstop Justin Howell (Millington, N.J./Watchung Hills) started three of the four double plays while Herman started the other. Senior second baseman Brad Schneider (Ambler, Pa./LaSalle College H.S.) turned two of them while sophomore second baseman Tim Gailor (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) turned the other two.

Freshman righty Colin Sommers (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) earned his first collegiate win with five solid innings. He allowed three runs on four hits and two walks while striking out one. Freshman Zack Papillo (Germantown, Md./Good Counsel) worked out of a jam in the eighth and pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for two shutout innings and his second save of the season. He struck out four.

The Royals return to action when they host Catholic in a Landmark Conference series at Volpe Field. Saturday's doubleheader starts at 12:30 p.m. with Sunday's single game slated for noon.
