CARLISLE, Pa. – Washington College senior pitcher P.J. Mikulus (Plainview, N.Y./Chaminade)tossed his first career no-hitter, the 16th in Centennial Conference history and the first nine-inning no-hitter by a WC pitcher in 48 years in a 7-0 victory in game one of a Centennial Conference doubleheader against host Dickinson on Saturday afternoon at MacPhail Field. The Shoremen completed the sweep of the Red Devils, their first in eight years, with a 13-5 victory in game two as the Shoremen have now won 80 games since 2015, the most in any four-year stretch, breaking the mark of 78 set from 2009-12.
Washington College 7 Dickinson 0 (Game 1)
How It Happened
- Washington took control of the game with its second five-run first inning of the week. With nobody out, Ryan Donnelly scored on an error by Dickinson for the game's first run. The next hitter, Ryan Zwier plated a pair on a single to score Aaron Barclay and Matt Tancredi to give the Shoremen a three-run advantage. Luke D'Ostilio then drove in Hirschbaum on a base hit to make it 4-0 and with one out, Zwier scored on an RBI groundout to cap the five-run frame.
- Barclay would make it 6-0 when he scored on an RBI groundout with one out in the top of the second and in the top of the seventh with nobody away Barclay came around to score on a base hit by Tancredi.
- Mikulus retired the first 13 Red Devils he faced before Dickinson got its first and only runner of the game in the bottom of the fifth on a fielding error by the Shoremen that allowed Brendan Pell to reach. However Pell would be stranded at first as Mikulus retired the next two hitters to end the inning as the error was the only thing that stood in the way of a perfect game.
- The senior pitcher would retire the last 14 hitters of the game to register the nine inning no-no in almost a half-century as he got Ryan Fuscaldo to line out to CJ Gillmer at second base for the last out of the game.
For The Shoremen (20-11, 4-5 CC)
- Hitting: Hirschbaum and Zwier (two RBI), Barclay (three runs)
- Pitching: Mikulus (win, 5-1, complete game no-hitter, zero walks, seven strikeouts)
- Washington had five hits, drew three walks and had four players get hit by pitch, while leaving seven on base.
- The Shoremen had one error in the game.
For Dickinson (6-18, 3-6 CC)
- Hitting: Pell (reached on error)
- Pitching: Connor Langan (loss 1-1, six innings, three hits, six runs, four earned, three walks, three strikeouts)
- The Red Devils did not draw a walk in addition to being no-hit.
- The hosts committed three errors in game one, leading to two unearned runs.
Notes
- Mikulus tossed Washington's first nine-inning no hitter since Steve Raynor tossed a perfect game against Swarthmore in 1970.
- The Shoremen are the first team to have two no-hitters in a season in Centennial Conference history as Nick Roberti tossed a no-no against Bethany on March 16.
- It is WC's fourth no-hitter since joining the Centennial for the 1993-94 academic year, the most of any school. Johns Hopkins and McDaniel have each tossed three no-hitters. In addition to Mikulus and Roberti, the other no hitters in the Centennial Era are by Shawn Hampt '05 versus Lincoln in 2002 and a combined no-no by Shane Mattingly '12 and Matt Christopher against CCNY in 2012.
- At the plate, the Shoremen also had a five-run first inning at Haverford on Tuesday.
Washington College 13 Dickinson 5 (Game 2)
How It Happened
- The Red Devils took a quick 1-0 lead in the last of the first when the second batter of the inning Robbie Thompson singled home Ben Carter.
- In the top of the second, the Shoremen tied it when Gillmer took off for home on an appeal throw to second base and beat the throw home from second base with two away to tie it 1-1. Joe Lozuponemade it 2-1 when he scored on a on a base hit by TC Conrad.
- Dickinson tied it in its half of the second when Joey Volpe scored on a one out base hit by Carter at 2-2.
- The Shoremen took a 4-2 lead in the top of the third when the second hitter of the inning Zwier launched a two-run home run that also scored Hirschbaum.
- The Red Devils answered with two in last of the third to level the game at 4-4. Daniel Zamarian scored Alex Jacobson on a base hit to cut the lead to 4-3 with no out and he would come around to score on a double play to tie it.
- Each team scored a run in the fourth inning. Tancredi singled home Donnelly with one away to give the Shoremen a 5-4 lead before Dickinson tied it in the last of the fourth when Zamarian singled in Jacobson with one away. The Red Devils had the bases loaded with one out, but a strike out and a pop out by the next two hitters kept the game even.
- WC took the lead for the rest of the game on a two-out base hit by Lozupone to score Gillmer at 6-5.
- The Shoremen broke the game open with three in the top of the sixth and two each in the top of the eighth and ninth innings.
For The Shoremen (21-11, 5-5 CC)
- Hitting: Tancredi (3-for-5, four RBI), Zwier (three RBI, home run), Donnelly (2-for-3, two runs), Barclay (two runs, two walks), Gillmer (3-for-4, two RBI, two runs), Lozupone (3-for-5, two runs), Conrad (2-for-5)
- Pitching: Billy Benson (win 3-0, 3 2/3 innings, three hits, zero runs, one walk, one strikeout), Sean Weiss (two scoreless innings of relief, one hit, one walk, zero strikeouts)
- Washington had 17 hits, drew four walks and had two players reach via hit by pitch, while leaving eight on base.
- The Shoremen had one error in the game, which led to one run for the Red Devils.
For Dickinson (6-19, 3-7 CC)
- Hitting: Carter (3-for-5, two runs), Thompson (3-for-4), Jacobson (2-for-4), Zamarin (2-for-5, two RBI), Chudacoff (2-for-5)
- Pitching: Reid Collins (loss 1-4, five innings, eight hits, five runs, five earned, one walk, three strikeouts)
- The Red Devils notched 15 hits, drew three walks and had one player get on via hit by pitch as they left 11 on base.
- The hosts had three errors in the loss, leading to zero unearned runs for Washington.

- Tancredi tied his career-best in RBI with his four driven in.
- Washington swept Dickinson for the first time since April 17, 2010, when they won both in Carlisle.
