Norton, MA --- Senior Matt Cook (Harwich, MA) batted 3-for-5 with a triple, three RBI and a run scored to lead Wheaton to an 8-1 triumph over WPI in a NEWMAC Baseball contest Tuesday afternoon at Sidell Stadium.

The Lyons got on the board with a two-out single to right by Cook in the bottom of the second. Junior Willy Boyd (Orleans, MA) then scampered home on a passed ball.

It remained a 3-0 ballgame until sophomore David Larson (Port Tobacco, MD) connected on an RBI double with a pair of outs in the top of the fourth. Junior Jimmy Gianquitti (North Scituate, RI) responded for the Wheaton with a run-producing single in the home half of the frame.

The hosts went on to double their run total with four in the sixth. Cook tripled in Gianquitti and scored on senior Chris Ruocco's (Lexington, MA) hit down the left field line. A miscue on a single allowed Ruocco to cross the dish and sophomore Bryant Salkind (Rochester, MA) sent a sac fly to left for the 8-1 advantage.

Juniors Steven Gallagher (Coventry, RI), Josh Herlands (Glastonbury, CT) and Benjamin Chaffee (Franklin, MA) each recorded a pair of hits while Gallagher, Chaffee and Larson all doubled. Junior Tyler Weiss (Monroe, CT), sophomore Kyle Wood (Hauppauge, NY) and senior Nick Borsari (Bolton, MA) totaled six strikeouts on the day.

Rucocco also had three hits for Wheaton to go with a pair by sophomore Nick Raposo (Johnston, RI), Boyd and Gianquitti. Cook and Jared Sharkey tripled while Raposo and Boyd each doubled. Senior Brady Furdon (Natick, MA) yielded one run on five hits and two walks while striking out a pair in the win. Freshman Gavin Reily (Bridgewater, MA) went three innings and classmate Patrick Arter (Lakeville, MA) pitched the ninth.

WPI (11-18, 3-11 NEWMAC) travels to Johnson & Wales tomorrow for a 4:30pm first pitch. Wheaton (16-12, 10-4) is at MIT Friday for a 3:30pm start.
