WILMINGTON, Ohio — Marietta College closed out a busy week with a doubleheader sweep of Wilmington College Sunday (April 22) afternoon in Ohio Athletic Conference baseball action. The Etta Express shutout Wilmington in game one, 5-0, and then took the second game, 11-1.

The Pioneers improve to 22-9 overall and 10-4 in the OAC. Wilmington falls to 9-21 on the season and 1-11 in conference play. Marietta is one game behind OAC leader Otterbein, who is 11-3, and one game ahead of Baldwin Wallace and Ohio Northern, who are both 9-5 in the league.

Senior David Stover pitched the complete game shutout in the first game improving to 8-1 on the season. The right-hander scattered four hits, all singles, and struck out four in 9.0 innings of work.

Lance Fleischman (1-4) started and got the loss for the Quakers. He threw 7.0 innings and allowed five runs on 12 hits with one walk and one strikeout. Jared Ferenchak and Bryant McCarty each worked one inning of relief.

Marietta jumped on top with two runs in the first inning. Geoff Snyder led off with a single and stole second. He would later score on an RBI single from Mike Hale.  Hale came around to score on a double off the bat of Damian Yenzi.

Snyder made it 3-0 in the second inning with a sacrifice fly that scored Jonathan Pingree, who reached single and then moved to third on a double from Seamus Kenneally.

Shane Fetsko picked up an RBI on a ground out in the fifth that scored Chris Petrucci who singled and moved to third on an error. Hale reached on a single and later scored when Yenzi hit his second RBI double of the game.

Snyder, Yenzi and Kenneally each had three hits in the game for the Pioneers. Hale and Pingree had two hits apiece.

The Etta Express broke open game two with seven runs in the third inning. Marietta sent 13 hitters to the plate in the rally. Snyder and Kenneally each had two-run singles in the frame.

Kenneally finished 3-for-4 with three RBI, while Hale went 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Snyder and Petrucci had two hits apiece.

Scott Oberhelman (4-1) picked up the win throwing 8.0 innings and allowing one run on three hits. He walked one and struck out five. Freshman Ray Hukill made his collegiate pitching debut and retired all three Quakers he faced in the ninth.

Matt Oney (0-4) started and took the loss for Wilmington. Oney threw 2.1 innings and allowed five runs on six hits. Five other Quakers toed the rubber in the nightcap.

Marietta plays a single, nine-inning nonconference game at Denison University on Tuesday (April 24). First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
