CHEMIS, FOULDS LEAD RAMAPO OVER WPU IN KEY NJAC VICTORY 6-5

Mahwah, NJ: The Ramapo College baseball team edge William Paterson University 6-5 in a key NJAC conference victory today at Jeff Maund Field. The Roadrunners improve to 24-11 overall, 9-5 in the conference while the Pioneers drop to 21-11 overall and 8-6 in the NJAC.

The Pioneers took a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Francis Deane scored with the bases loaded on an infield ground out from Matt Ferrara. Ramapo would come back with two runs in the bottom half of the inning. A Pioneer error with two outs allowed Anthony Kuzmenko to score before Bobby Shannon drove a single to left field plating Connor Walsh with the go ahead run 2-1.

In the fourth inning, the Pioneers tied the game 2-2 on a sac fly from Adams before Ramapo scored three runs on four hits in the bottom half of the inning for a 5-2 lead. Vincenzo Sita laced a single down the left field line before WPU recorded the first two outs of the inning. Liam Duffy poked a single into center field before both runners moved up on a wild pitch. Matt Chemis came up big with a hard-hit single into left field which allowed both runners to score. Chemis moved up to second on the relay throw back into the field before he moved to third on an Austin Unglaub single putting runners on the corners with two outs. Unglaub got caught in a run down between first and second base while Chemis raced home while Unglaub raced back to first base and was called safe as Ramapo extended their lead 5-2.

In the sixth, Chemis walked with two outs, stole second and moved to third on a throwing error by the Pioneers. Anthony Kuzmenko then singled to center field allowing Chemis to score for the 6-2 lead. WPU tacked on three runs in the seventh inning to come within one 6-5. The Pioneers had the bases loaded with one out when Greg Cuevas laced a single into the hole between short stop and third base allowing Dan Carter to score. Eric Breun then lifted a pinch-hit sac fly to left field plating the second run of the inning before an error allowed the third run to cross home plate.

Kyle Haag, who entered the game in the sixth inning, shutdown the Pioneers in the eighth inning with three quick outs before surrendering a leadoff single in the top of the ninth. Following a sac bunt from WPU, Kevin Foulds came into the game for the Roadrunners to get the final two outs as he struck out the final batters to earn his 7th save of the season. Ramapo extends their win streak to eight.

Ramapo starting pitcher Kevin Stewart (5-0) worked out of a few jams in the game as he scattered four hits, surrendered two runs while he posted six walks in five innings. Haag worked 3.1 innings, striking out one, walking two and scattering three hits.

The Roadrunners recorded nine hits in the game while Kuzmenko and Sita each finished 2-4 while Chemis led the way with two RBI with a 1-3 day at the plate and two runs scored.

Ramapo returns to action tomorrow afternoon when they travel to Albright College for a non-conference game at 4:00pm.
