Bombers Blast Past Rochester With Big 8th Inning

ITHACA, NY – A huge eighth inning lifted homestanding Ithaca College baseball team to a 17-12 victory over the University of Rochester on Thursday evening at Freeman Field.
 
The host Bombers (19-13), scored a whopping 11 times in the eighth, rallying from as many as seven runs down in the game to post their fifth win in the last six games.  UR falls to 11-12 on the season with the loss, snapping a four-game win streak.
 
Jack Herman had a big game at the plate for the Yellowjackets, going 3-4 with a double, triple and two RBI.  Tyler Schmidt recorded two hits, three RBI and three runs scored.
 
Steve Pickering added a 2-5 day with a double, 2 RBI and run, while David Rieth and Drew Bankovich each recorded two hits.  Aaron Craig was 1-2, drew three walks and added three runs scored.
 
Ithaca's Webb Little ended with three hits, a triple, three runs and an RBI.  Andrew Bailey added a 2-5 day with two doubles and four batted in.  Domenic Boresta also drove in four and scored twice for the Bombers.
 
Rochester's Herman got the scoring started in the top of the first, tripling down the right field line with two outs to score Schmidt.
 
In the third, Herman made it 2-0, doubling down the other line, scoring Schmidt again with his second extra-base hit of the contest.  Rieth followed with a single to left, driving in Aiden Finch.

The lead went to 4-0 in the fourth, with Schmidt providing an RBI groundout.
 
Ithaca would tie the score in the fourth inning, scoring four runs, one on a wild pitch, two on a Bailey double and a fourth on a Sam Little groundout.
 
A big fifth inning for UR regained the lead, as the Yellowjackets sent 12 men to the plate, scoring seven runs.  Kyle Trombley had an RBI single, Schmidt drove in two with a base hit with four others scoring thanks to Ithaca miscues.
 
Another Boresta single scored two more runs in the fifth, cutting the lead to 11-6.
 
The eighth is where everything then went right for IC and wrong for the Yellowjackets.  It started with a UR fielding error, followed by Bailey ripping a double to left center to score a run.
 
After another double to make it 11-8 and a single, Rochester pitchers hit three straight batters to score two additional runs, trimming the lead to one.
 
An RBI groundout scored the tying run, Boresta singled in two more to give the Bombers the lead, and that was followed by three hits and a sac fly to score four more runs, making the score 17-11 Ithaca.
 
Rochester was able to get one run in the ninth on Pickering's double, reaching the final score of 17-12.
 
On the mound, Rochester's starter was Kevin Ho who went 3.1 innings, giving up four hits, two runs and two walks while striking out five batters.  In relief, Garret Renslow shut down the Bombers for two innings, only giving up one hit while striking out three.
 
The Yellowjackets are back in action on Saturday and Sunday with conference doubleheaders on the road at Skidmore College.  Saturday's DH starts at 1 pm, with Sunday's action beginning at noon.
