DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Sophomore Nate Tellier (Attleboro, Mass.) blasted a pair of homers on his way to tallying three RBI, while senior Zack Reid (Dighton, Mass.) was perfect out of the bullpen with four sensational innings to pilot the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth to an exciting 4-3 victory over Suffolk at the UMD baseball field on Thursday afternoon.

The Basics

Score: UMass Dartmouth 4, Suffolk 3

Records: Corsairs 19-11, 3-7 LEC | Rams 18-16, 11-1 GNAC

How it Happened

In what was likely the Corsairs' most head-scratching run of the season, UMass Dartmouth scored in the first inning as Suffolk third baseman Tim Brigham (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) questionably elected to chase after runner Chris Wood (Berkley, Mass.) for the unassisted putout; on the play, Tellier raced home to cross the plate ahead of the tag.

Tellier then tagged a towering fly ball to left that sailed over the trees in the third, doubling the hosts' advantage to 2-0. Starting sophomore southpaw Ryan Britton (Milford, N.H.) cruised through the first four innings, with his lone blemish being a three-run shot to senior Brady Chant (Warwick, R.I.) in the fifth. The Corsairs would not ease their foot off the offensive gas pedal, though, as Tellier delivered a laser just over the left center field wall to snatch the lead back, 4-3.

Senior reliever Zack Reid (Dighton, Mass.) was absolutely brilliant out of the pen, pinpointing 34 of his 47 pitches for strikes across four perfect shutout innings. The righty faced the minimum 12 batters across the four frames, not allowing a single baserunner and picking up a pair of strikeouts to seal the win.

Inside the Numbers

  • UMass Dartmouth ranked fifth in the first edition of the NCAA Div. III New England rankings.
  • Tellier recorded his second two-homer game, encoring his game two performance from Apr. 21 against Western Connecticut last Saturday. The sophomore clinched his sixth three-hit game of the 2018 campaign with a 3-for-4, three run, three RBI outing at the dish.
  • Sophomore Jose Vasquez (Roxbury, Mass.) extends his hitting streak to eight games, and has picked up a base-knock in 15 of the last 16 battles.
  • The Blue and Gold extend its season-best win streak to five consecutive triumphs.
  • All-time, the Corsair-Ram series stands at 21-7 in favor of UMass Dartmouth. With the win, the Corsairs snap a mini two-game skid against Suffolk.
