Keuka College Baseball Splits with Wells College

KEUKA PARK, N.Y. — The Keuka College Baseball team split a North Eastern Athletic College doubleheader with Wells College on Tuesday at Kuhl Field

Wells College defeated the Wolves 9-8 in extra innings in game one, but Keuka College (16-13, 9-4 NEAC) rebounded for the 12-9 victory in game two.

Wells College 9 at Keuka College 8 – 8 innings

The Express jumped out to a 3-0 lead in game one as they scored three in the top of the second inning. The Wolves got one back in the third as John Rizzo (Auburn, N.Y. / Auburn) had an RBI double to score Sean Sheets (Manchester, N.Y. / Red Jacket).

Wells College took a 4-1 lead in the fourth, but the Green and Gold took the lead in the bottom of the inning. Alec Bowie (Sparta, N.J. / Sparta) and John Rizzo each had RBI singles in the inning. Keuka College scored three other runs on bases loaded walks or hit by the pitch as Keuka college led 6-5.

The Express rebounded with four runs in the fifth and carried an 8-6 lead into the bottom of the ninth. With two outs and two on, John Rizzo tripled to the right centerfield gap to tie the game at 8-8. Rizzo would be stranded at third and the game would go to extra innings.

Wells College got a sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth for the lead. Brooks Vertoske (Horseheads, N.Y. / Horseheads) led off the bottom of the inning with a single and stole second base. He would be left on second, however as Wells College got the next three batters to win game one 9-8.

Lead Wolf: Senior shortstop John Rizzo set a new career-high with four runs batted in as a part of his three-hit performance in game one.

Keuka College 12 vs. Wells College 9

Wells College took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first but that was quickly erased in the bottom of the inning. John Rizzo led the inning off with his second home run of the season to tie the game. Brooks Vertoske would later work a bases-loaded walk and the Wolves got an RBI on a groundout as Keuka took a 3-1 lead.

The lead was short-lived as Wells College tied the game in the top of the second. They then took a 6-3 lead, scoring a single run in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Sean Sheets kicked off the scoring for Keuka with an RBI single. John Rizzo followed that with an RBI double. An RBI single by Dan Bamann (Rochester, N.Y. / Irondequoit) tied the game and the Wolves took the lead on another bases-loaded walk by Vertoske. The Green and Gold added a run and led 8-6 after six.

Keuka College extended their lead with four runs in the eighth. The big hit in the inning came from Sean Sheets as the freshman hit a two-run triple down the right field line. Wells College scored three in the top of the ninth, but Keuka College held on for the 12-9 victory.

Lead Wolf: Sean Sheets had a pair of triples in game two against the Express and added a single. He became the ninth player in program history to hit two triples in a game. Sheets drove in three runs for Keuka College in the win.

  • Keuka College is now 3-1 all-time against Wells College
  • The loss in game one snapped Keuka's four-game winning streak in extra-inning games. The Wolves are 3-1 this season in extra innings and 16-11-1 overall
  • Dan Bamann tied his career-high with four hits in game two against Wells
  • John Rizzo finished the doubleheader against Wells College with a single, two doubles, a triple, and a home run. Rizzo drove in a combined six runs on Tuesday
  • Bryan Johnsen (Otisville, N.Y. / Minisink Valley) took the loss in game one for Keuka. It was his first loss since April 17, 2016 when he pitched nine innings of relief in a 13-inning loss to Penn St.-Berks

Up Next for Keuka College: The Wolves close their regular season at home this weekend. Keuka College will host Penn St.-Abington on Saturday at Kuhl Field. The Wolves will then face conference-leading Penn St.-Berks on Sunday on Parents' and Senior Day.
