Ithaca Shuts Out Elmira, 12-0, in Home Finale

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College baseball team wrapped up its home schedule with a 12-0 shutout of Elmira College in an Empire 8 Conference contest on Thursday afternoon. Ithaca improves to 24-14 overall and 11-7 in the Empire 8, and will conclude its regular season on Saturday at Wells College at 1 p.m.

The Bombers took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second on a perfect executed hit-and-run which led to an RBI single through the left side by junior Matt Carey. Fellow junior Garrett Snyder scored from second base after he reached on a base hit to left and then swiped a bag.

Junior Jake Generali gave IC a 2-0 lead with a double to left, which plated freshman Jack Lynch, and then junior Andrew Bailey capped off the four-run second inning with a two-RBI single through the left side. Senior Domenic Boresta and Generali scored in the base hit.

IC added another run in the bottom of the third as Carey laced a double down the left field line and Snyder came around to score from first base after he found his way on with a base hit up the middle.

In the fifth inning, the Bombers scored three more runs on five hits to extend their lead to 8-0. Freshman Garrett Callaghan led off with a double and moved up on a groundout. Snyder would drive him in with a double to right and then scored on a two-base hit by Carey to make the score 7-0. Lynch drove in the final run of the frame with a single up the middle and Carey scored from second.

Carey added another RBI to his total with a single in the sixth that allowed Bailey to cross the plate after he led off with a walk.

The 12-run barrage finished up in the seventh inning as junior Jackson Smith stroked a base hit through the left side to bring in Boresta. Junior Adam Gallagher recorded a sac fly in the next plate appearance and sophomore Marco Fontana scampered home for the 11th run of the game, and then junior John Peterson roped a single up the middle to push home Smith.

In all, the Bombers had 18 hits in the game and six went for extra bases. Carey had two doubles, while Callaghan, Generali and Snyder each had one. Boresta recorded a triple as well.

Sophomore Tom Cosentino earned his second victory of the season in seven innings pitched. Cosentino surrendered seven hits and struck out six without allowing a walk. Senior Jack Morello pitched a perfect eighth inning and junior Webb Little closed out the game in the ninth with a strikeout.

After Saturday's game at Wells, the Bombers will take on St. John Fisher College at 2:30 p.m. on May 10 in Hoboken, N.J. for the first round of the Empire 8 Conference Tournament.
