Tuzzolo Scores Twice for #1 R-MC vs. #4 SU in ODAC Tourney

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Senior Joseph Tuzzolo (Newport News, Va./Menchville) went 2 for 3 with two runs and one RBI as the top-ranked and top-seeded Randolph-Macon baseball team dropped a 9-7 decision to fourth-seeded Shenandoah Friday afternoon at City Stadium to kick off Round 2 of the ODAC Tournament.

The Yellow Jackets (31-6-1) will play the loser of the game between No. 2 Virginia Wesleyan and No. 3 Roanoke on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. The Hornets (32-10) will play the winner at 7 p.m.

R-MC never led in the contest. After three scoreless innings, SU put up a pair in the top of the fourth. In the bottom of the frame, Tuzzolo drew a two-out walk, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by sophomore Reece Yeargain (Richmond, Va./Benedictine) to make it a 2-1 game. The Hornets scored single runs in the fifth and sixth and two in the seventh to extend the lead to 6-1.

In the bottom of the seventh, sophomore Michael Nickles (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) scored on a wild pitch, senior Cole Migliorini (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) drove in a run on a groundout, and senior Rick Spiers (South Chesterfield, Va./Matoaca) added an RBI single as R-MC narrowed the deficit to 6-4.

Sophomore Shawn Nickles (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) delivered a sacrifice fly in the eighth to make it a one-run contest at 6-5.

SU added three insurance runs in the top of the ninth before Tuzzolo had an RBI double in the bottom of the ninth and scored on a fielder's choice by sophomore Cole Grinde (Woodford, Va./Caroline) to make the final 9-7.

Yeargain and Grinde both had two hits and one RBI.
