LYNCHBURG, Va. - Senior Rick Spiers (South Chesterfield, Va./Matoaca) went 2 for 3 with a double, a walk, a run and one RBI as the top-seeded and top-ranked Randolph-Macon baseball team dropped a 6-5 decision to third-seeded Roanoke Saturday afternoon in an elimination game in the 2018 ODAC Tournament at City Stadium.

The Yellow Jackets (31-7-1) will wait until Sunday night/Monday morning for information on potential NCAA regional play. The Maroons moved to 30-10.

R-MC started the scoring in the bottom of the first. Junior Jeff Butler (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) had a one-out single to start the rally. Spiers had a two-out base hit to left that was mishandled, allowing Butler to score the game's first run.

RC plated three in the top of the third to take a 3-1 lead. The Yellow Jackets responded in the bottom of the frame. Sophomore Ryan Duphorn (Erial, N.J./Paul VI) had a leadoff walk and scored on a double play to make it a 3-2 game. An inning later, sophomore Reece Yeargain (Richmond, Va./Benedictine) reached on an error and came home on a balk to even the score at 3-3.

R-MC took the lead in the bottom of the eighth. Senior Cole Migliorini (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Spiers doubled down the right field line, driving in Migliorini with the go-ahead run. Spiers moved to third on the throw to the plate. With two away, sophomore pinch-hitter Cole Grinde (Woodford, Va./Caroline) reached on an error and allowed Spiers to score to give the Yellow Jackets a 5-3 lead.

R-MC was 28-0 this season when leading after eight, but RC put up three in the top of the ninth to go ahead 6-5. The Yellow Jackets were retired in order in the bottom of the ninth.
