Gwynedd Mercy Advances To CSAC Championship Series

WEST LAWN, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy advanced to the championship series of the 2018 CSAC Baseball Tournament with their 2-1 win over Neumann Friday night in an elimination game.

The Griffins will face Keystone starting at 11 a.m. at Owl's Field in West Lawn needing two wins to dethrone the Giants as defending champs.

Earlier on Friday, GMercyU fell in the winner's bracket to Keystone, 17-7, to slide into an elimination game against the Knights. Neumann was able to knock off Cabrini to set up another elimination game against Gwynedd.

In the final game of the day, the Griffins broke a 1-1 tie in the seventh getting a run on a suicide squeeze for the eventual go-ahead run. Josh Lopez made to third on a single from Dave Tatoian with one out. Sachael Sciarretta stepped to the plate a put down a bunt which he beat for an infield single but more importantly scored Lopez for a 2-1 lead.

Reliever Liam Sullivan, who entered in the fifth, threw into the ninth, and struck out a career-high six batters while not allowing a hit. However in the top of the ninth, the Knights were able to get two on with two outs. Tatoian came on in relief of Sullivan to get the third out on a strikeout to keep the Griffins' season alive.

Evan Miller's RBI single in the second would put GMercyU ahead, 1-0. The Knights answered with John Schoelkopf's run-scoring hit in the fourth.

Tatoian and Miller had two hits apiece, totaling four of the team's nine hits. Schoelkopf totaled three of the team's four hits.

In the day's first game, the Griffins fell behind 7-0 before crossing a run in the sixth. The team put together a six-run seventh on five hits, two hit batsmen, and a walk.

Shaughn Wright went 2-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored. Tommy Nardini added two hits as well.
