#1 UMASS BOSTON COMES BACK TO DEFEAT #5 RAMAPO IN 10 INNINGS 2-1

Harwich, MA: The #1 UMass Boston baseball team came back to defeat #5 Ramapo College tonight in game seven of the 2018 NCAA Harwich, MA Regional 2-1 in ten innings. The Beacons improve to 36-8 while the Roadrunners now stand at 33-14 overall.

Ramapo got a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the second inning when Connor Walsh walked and moved to second on a sac bunt. Following the second out of the inning, a hard hit single up the middle by Ryan MacNaughton put runners on the corners before Liam Duffy laced a single into right-center field to put the Roadrunners on the board 1-0. Matt Chemis drew a walk to load the bases before Austin Unglaub laced a line drive into the right-center field gap that UMass Boston right fielder Nick Herzog made a diving catch to end the Ramapo threat.

Following the first out of the top of the fourth inning the Beacons recorded back-to-back hits from Dan Murphy and Chris Fowler to put runners on first and second with one out. With two outs, Heitler fired behind the runner at second base to shortstop Unglaub to applied the tag to pick off the runner for the third out of the inning.

The Beacons would tie the game in the top of the fifth 1-1. Nick Herzog led off with a walk before he moved to third base on a hard-hit ball through the right side of the infield. Herzog would later score on Sal Frosceno's RBI ground-out to short stop.

In the top of the sixth inning, Kyle Boudrias led off with a single before Chris Fowler laced a hard hit single up the middle with one out to put runners on first and second. Following the second out of the inning, the Beacons recorded a double steal, before Heitler induced a strikeout swinging on the next pitch to hold the score 1-1.

With the first out of the top of the eighth inning, Heitler recorded his 112th strikeout of the season which set the single season record at Ramapo. The record was set in 1978 by John Marchase. Heitler is also the third Roadrunner to record more than 100 strikeouts in a single season (Marchase 111 & John Spazante 101).

In the top of the 10th inning for UMass Boston, Huegi walked before Eddie Riley laced a triple to the right field wall plating Huegi to take a 2-1 lead. Bryan Kaufmann would send the Roadrunners down in order in the bottom of the tenth inning earning his second win of the season as the Beacons advanced in the NCAA Harwich, MA Regional to game 11 tomorrow at 4:30pm.

UMass Boston starting pitcher JT Morin earned a no-decision as he struck out six, walked two and scattered four hits while surrendering one run in seven innings of work. Kaufmann (2-0) struck out one and did not give up a hit in the final three innings of play.

Heitler earned a no-decision with ten strikeouts, three walks while he surrendered just five hits in nine-innings of work. Kevin Foulds (2-3) took the loss, striking out two and surrendering one run and one hit.

Ramapo will now play in game nine Saturday morning at 9:30am as they meet #6 Mitchell College (31-9). The four games scheduled for tomorrow have been moved to the Massachusetts Maritime Academy baseball field.
