Sewanee Baseball Defeats MacMurray in Saturday Twinbill; Sunday’s Finale Canceled

SEWANEE, Tenn. - The Sewanee baseball team captured a doubleheader sweep on Saturday against the Highlanders of MacMurray College, 10-0 and 8-1. Due to foggy conditions on the Domain, the doubleheader was played in Winchester, Tenn. at Tomahawk Stadium.

Due to rain around in the forecast on Sunday, the series finale was canceled.

HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME 1
-The Tigers used patience at the plate in the opener with four walks in the opening inning. Trey Akins brought home Jared Demkowicz on a fielder's choice.

-The next batter, Carter Huffman scored Akins on a double. Following a Tyler Dunbar walk and a Max Murray free pass to load the bases, Sully McCreery walked in Carter Huffman for a 3-0 lead.

-In the fourth, Chris McNulty popped a single into left to score Demkowicz, who led off the inning with a walk.

-The big fly came in the fifth. With runners at first and second (McCreery and Garrett Liebe), Demkowicz sent one over the right field wall for his first dinger of the season.

-Sewanee made it an 8-0 lead as Demkowicz, with the bases loaded, was hit by a pitch. Reaching base, Murray was sent home.

-The Tigers put the game to mercy rule status in the seventh with a Dunbar double to score Josh Roberts and Akins to cap the 10-0 shutout.

HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME 2
-In the second inning of the nightcap, Jack Galanek, who reached base on a hit by pitch, later scored thanks to MacMurray balk.
-After Jared Demkowicz was beaned by a pitch, during Carter Huffman's at bat, he stole second, but with Galanek on third base, he tried to score. He was able to, thanks to a MacMurray error.

-Later in the inning, Chris McNulty recorded a two-run double to cap off a four-run inning.

-The Tigers added a run in the fifth as Demkowicz scored on a throwing error.

-The Highlanders scored their first run of the series with an RBI single by Will Logsdon in the sixth.

-In the seventh, Riley Brandvold put the game out of reach with a two-run RBI triple. As he was sliding into third, the ball got away from the MacMurray third baseman and he scored on the error.

SEWANEE KEY STATISTICS
-Jared Demkowicz drove in four RBI and scored five runs on the doubleheader.

-Chris McNulty finished with four hits and three RBI.

-Sewanee finished the doubleheader with 13 walks.

-Trey Holland (2-0) pitched seven shutout innings in game one and allowed two hits and punched out 11 strikeouts.

-Dalton Buckingham (2-0) struck out eight batters through five innings and did not allow a hit.

MACMURRAY KEY STATISTICS
-Will Logsdon recorded two hits in the nightcap of the twinbill.

-Hunter Martin (0-1) suffered the loss in game one, while Tanner Coleman (0-1) took the loss in the second game.

UP NEXT
The Tigers will remain at home next weekend with a three-game series against Carroll (Wis.), beginning Saturday.
