Sewanee Baseball Splits Saturday Doubleheader with Wittenberg

SEWANEE, Tenn. - The Sewanee baseball team picked up a split of Saturday's twinbill of Wittenberg Saturday. The Ohio Tigers won the opener, 8-6, but the home Tigers took the second game, 3-2, from Montgomery Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME 1
-The Tigers struck for two runs in the bottom of the first inning thanks to a two-run RBI single by Carter Huffman.

-The visitors responded with four runs in the next three innings to lead 5-2 after three and a half innings.

-In the middle innings, the Tigers started chipping away at the deficit. Max Murray made it a 5-3 affair with a double to bring home Tyler Dunbar in the fourth.

-After a scoreless top half of the fifth on defense, Sewanee evened the score in the bottom half of the frame. Jared Demkowicz brought home Bryce Benedict to make it a 5-4 affair thanks to an RBI double.

-The next batter, Riley Brandvold, used a groundout to score Demkowicz to even the game at five.

-Despite the Ohio Tigers reclaiming the lead in the sixth, the home team evened the score in the eighth as Huffman came home before Josh Roberts ended the inning on a caught stealing.

-However, Wittenberg prevailed with two runs in the ninth to seal the 8-6 win.

HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME 2
-The Tigers, trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth, captured the lead for good with a three-run frame. Garrett Liebe brought two home on an RBI double, while Jared Demkowicz posted a double of his own to bring Liebe around.

-The game was called in the middle of the sixth inning due to darkness.

SEWANEE KEY STATISTICS
-Carter Huffman and Max Murray recorded two hits each in game one.

-Garrett Liebe, in game two, went 2-for-2 with two RBI and a run scored.

-Lucas DeSantis (1-0) recorded the win in the second game.

WITTENBERG KEY STATISTICS
-Hayden Knox, Mason Davis and Patrick Henry recorded two hits each all in the middle of the order.

-Adam Mays (1-0) tossed two shutout innings to secure the win in relief in the opener.

UP NEXT
Weather permitting, the battle of the Tigers will play the rubber match Sunday.
