Marietta splits in Florida

PORT CHARLOTTE, Florida — Marietta College split of pair of games Sunday (March 10) in the Snowbird Baseball Classic outslugging Arcadia, 15-12, and falling to No. 5 ranked Swarthmore, 11-5. The Pioneers are now 1-4 on the season. Arcadia and Swarthmore are both 2-2 overall.

Against Arcadia, every Pioneer in the batting order picked up at least one hit as Marietta finished with 19 hots in the game. Jonathan Pingree led the way collecting four hits in five at bats. He also drove in a pair of runs and scored another.

Damian Yenzi went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. Fuve other Pioneers had two hits in the game. Freshman Alex Page socked his first career home run and finished with two hits, an RBI and three runs scored.

Trent Castle, Mike Hale, Logan Vietmeier, Brady Cottom and Drew Holderbach each had a double. Vietmeier knocked in three runs and scored twice, while Holderbach and Greg Peffley each drove in two runs.

Arcadia grabbed the early lead with three runs in the first inning, but Marietta exploded for nine in the top of the third. Both teams had a big seventh inning as the Pioneers scored four and Arcadia plated six.

Justin Aviles started on the mound for Marietta and went 3.1 innings. He allowed five runs, three earned, on seven hits. Aviles walked three and struck out two. Sam Mathews (1-0) picked up his first career win tossing 3.0 innings and giving up six runs on five hits with a walk and three strikeouts. Isaac Danford worked the final 2.2 innings and gave up one run on one hit and struck out four.

Jeremy Sabathne (1-1) started and got the loss for Arcardia. He pitched 2.1 innings and gave uo eight runs on seven hits with three walks. Luke Fournier and Colin Bowdish each threw in relief.

Swarthmore staked itself to a 7-0 lead with two runs in the second and five more in the third. Marietta cut the margin in half with four runs in the bottom of fifth.

Nolan Wetherald had an RBI double and Vietmeier smacked a two-run single in the Pioneer rally. Vietmeier, Yenzi, and Page each had two hits in the game for Marietta.

Quinn Hecker (0-1) started and took the loss throwing 4.0 innings. He was charged with seven runs, six earned, on seven hits. Mitchell Louis worked 3.1 strong innings of relief, He allowed two runs on two hits. Brenden Locorato worked the final 1.2 innings and gave up two runs on three hits.

Ryan Warm (1-0) started and got the win. He tossed 6.0 innings and allowed four runs on six hits with four walks and six strikeouts. Owen Webb picked up his first save with 3.0 innings og one-hit relief.

Marietta plays Susquehanna University Monday (March 11) at 11 a.m.
