Oglethorpe shut out by Case Western Reserve in first of two-game series

More news about: Oglethorpe

The Oglethorpe baseball team suffered a tough game offensively for the second consecutive day at Anderson Field Sunday, falling to Case Western Reserve 9-0 in the first of a two-game series. The result dropped the Stormy Petrels to 5-10 on the season.

The visiting Spartans tallied three first-inning runs off sophomore right-hander Devlin Basinger and took a 3-0 lead. Basinger settled down, though, and got through the second and third innings without allowing a run. Case Western Reserve added four runs in the fourth, though, including a pair of unearned runs, to make it 7-0. They scored another unearned run in the fifth, then brought home their ninth run of the game on an RBI groundout in the seventh.

Meanwhile, Oglethorpe managed just four hits off of Spartan starter Matt Levine. They had only two baserunners reach second base in the game, both coming in the seventh inning when senior first baseman Andrew Mink doubled down the line and senior right fielder Patrick Burnette advanced to third with one out. Levine wriggled out of that situation without allowing a run, though.

Junior second baseman Austin Jackson went 2-for-4 on the day and was the only Petrel with multiple hits.

Basinger suffered the loss and fell to 1-1 on the season. He allowed five earned runs on seven hits, a walk, and two hit batsmen over four-plus innings.

The Petrels will be back in action Monday afternoon when they welcome Case Western Reserve back to Anderson Field to complete the two-game series at 1 p.m. After that, they'll host No. 19 Piedmont at Anderson Field on Tuesday before hitting the road to continue SAA play.
