Sewanee Baseball Walks Off in Game One, Caps Doubleheader with Sweep of Red Devils

SEWANEE, Tenn. - The Sewanee baseball team completed a Wednesday doubleheader sweep of the Eureka Red Devils, winning 5-4 and 4-1, from Montgomery Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME 1
-The Tigers recorded an RBI single by Trey Akins that scored Riley Brandvold.

-In the second, the Red Devils scored three runs to take the 3-1 lead.

-In the bottom half of the third, Sewanee evened the score at three runs each. Brandvold brought home Josh Roberts on a base knock, while Braxton Swanson got Brandvold home on a sacrifice fly.

-With the game scheduled for seven innings, the opener went into extras. In the eighth, the Red Devils scored a run in the top half of the frame thanks to a balk by the Sewanee pitcher.

-Sewanee responded in the bottom half of the eighth to walk it off. Max Murray evened the score on an RBI double that saw Anthony Baumgart come home.

-After Jake Woolard was beaned by a pitch, Bryce Benedict brought Murray around with a base knock to win the contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME 2
-Also scheduled as a seven-inning contest, the Tigers got on the board first in the bottom half of the frame. Josh Roberts laced a double that saw Trey Akins score on the play.

-Later in the inning, Carter Huffman had a productive at-bat with an RBI groundout.

-The Red Devils scored a run to avoid the shutout in the second inning, but the Tigers put the contest away in the fourth inning with a Joey Calcagno two-run single.

SEWANEE KEY STATISTICS
-Joey Calcagno recorded two hits in game two with two RBI.

-Riley Brandvold and Trey Akins each recorded three hits in the doubleheader. Akins drove in an RBI, while Brandvold scored three times.

-Holden Shell (1-0) earned the win in relief in the opener, but it was Shane Smith's five shutout innings that helped Sewanee force extra innings with Eureka. Smith allowed three hits and fanned two batters.

-In the nightcap, Zach Brodsky (1-0) allowed one earned run on four hits in five innings on the mound. Danny McDonnell (3) collected the save with two punchouts in the seventh.

EUREKA KEY STATISTICS
-Mike Redmond finished with three hits in the two games, including a multi-hit game in game one.

-Mason Diederich (0-1) suffered the loss in game one, while J.D. Theile (1-1) took the loss in the second game.

UP NEXT
The series finale is scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday at Montgomery Field.
