Tague and Black Combine to Shutout Lesley in 5-0 Bears Win

Kissimmee, Fla., March 13, 2019 – The Washington University in St. Louis baseball team extended its unbeaten streak to six-straight games as the Bears shutout Lesley University in a 5-0 victory to begin play in Florida over spring break.

WashU improved to 6-2-1 on the year with the win while Lesley dropped to 1-3 on the year. Sophomore pitcher Tim Tague picked up his second victory of the season by tossing seven shutout innings, allowing just three hits and one walk compared to six strikeouts.

Sophomore pitcher Mitchell Black concluded the Bears second shutout of the season. He threw the final two scoreless frames surrendering one hit and striking out one.

The Red & Green reached double digits in hits for the fifth time this season as four Bears had multi hit performances. Sophomore first baseman Johnny LaMantia led the team with three hits in four at-bats and his two runs tied with junior centerfielder John Ostrander for the team lead. Freshman right fielder Jackson Gray knocked in a game-high two runs.

Gray put the Bears ahead in the top of the second inning with a two run single up the middle. His single up the middle allowed Ostrander and LaMantia to score after the duo hit back-to-back singles to lead the inning off.

Ostrander and LaMantia provided back-to-back hits once again in the fifth inning. With two outs and nobody on, Ostrander doubled to right center before LaMantia drove him in with a double of his own which pushed the Bears lead to 3-0.

Freshman shortstop Caleb Durbin's leadoff double in the seventh inning was cashed in by senior second baseman Evan Nagel. Nagel sent a 1-1 pitch up the middle to center field and put WashU ahead 4-0. The Bears tacked on another run in the eighth inning as LaMantia scored on a double play ball.
