Sewanee Baseball Brings Out Lumber in 32-11 Demolish of Eureka

SEWANEE, Tenn. - The Sewanee baseball team scored in each inning except the first and third and trailed 5-0 after an inning and a half of play, but that did not stop the offense, who posted a 32-11 victory over the Red Devils of Eureka College to complete the three-game series sweep at Montgomery Field on Thursday morning.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-With an impending storm coming onto the Domain later in the day, the winds were whipping around during the three-plus hour affair.

-Eureka had the bats going in the first two innings, as they led 5-0 after an inning and a half of play.

-Sewanee's offense came to life in the second inning. After Max Murray broke the shutout, Garrett Liebe and Joey Calcagno recorded back-to-back homers to cut the deficit to 5-4.

-After a scoreless third inning by both teams, Eureka tacked on its sixth run to push the lead to two, 6-4. In the top of the fourth.

-The lead for the Red Devils would be short-lived as the Tigers came to bat in the bottom half of the frame, as they scored eight runs. After the first two batters reached base, Liebe flipped the score with his second dinger of the game with a three-run shot to give the Purple and Gold the lead, 7-6.

-Three batters later, with a runner on base, Riley Brandvold sent one to straight away center field to make it 9-6.

-Following a pitching change and four batters later, with the bases loaded, Jake Woolard cleared the bases with a gapper to left center.

-The visitors pushed the deficit down to four runs, 12-8, in the top half of the fifth, but Sewanee put the game away with 20 runs in the next three innings.

32 IS ENOUGH
-This is the second 30-run game in the team's history, dating back to 1992. Sewanee also posted a 30-run game in 2012 with a 34-4 win over Rust (Miss.).

-Since 2013, when Sewanee was one of the founding members of the Southern Athletic Association, this is the most runs in a game in the league. The Tigers surpassed Berry's 27 runs in 2017 for the most runs in a game.

-It is also the most runs in the SAA-era, surpassing the 25 runs scored versus Rust in 2014.

SEWANEE KEY STATISTICS
-All nine starters for Sewanee recorded at least one hit, and everybody who played in the game reached base. Sewanee recorded 28 hits and 13 walks in the contest.

-Of the 28 hits, 13 were extra-base hits: eight doubles, one triple and four homers.

-The bottom of the order really came to life. The last three batters went 10-for-15 with 16 RBI and 14 runs scored.

-Joey Calcagno, in the nine-hole, posted a 4-for-5 day at the plate, missing the triple for a cycle. He recorded a homer, single and double.

-Jake Woolard recorded a five-RBI day and scored five runs with two doubles.

-Garrett Liebe was also one of those big bats in the bottom of the order, recording a multi-homer game with five RBI.

-Riley Brandvold added a 3-for-5 day with three RBI, as he posted a triple and a homer, while Trey Akins recorded three hits, runs and RBI each.

-Carter Huffman also recorded a three-hit day for Sewanee with a double and two RBI.

-Andrew Naspinski (2-1) recorded the win in relief, tossing the fifth and sixth innings.

EUREKA KEY STATISTICS
-Drew Thoele and Jake Carter each posted two hits.

-Kyle Cashdollar (0-1) started the game and suffered the loss, tossing 3.1 innings, allowing nine runs, five earned, on eight hits.

UP NEXT
The Tigers will wrap up the seven-game homestand this weekend with an SAA series with Oglethorpe. The series begins Saturday at noon with a twinbill.
