Strong Pitching Leads #7 CUC Past #15 Webster

More news about: Concordia-Chicago

St.Leo, Fla. – Looking to build on their five game winning streak, the Concordia University Chicago Baseball team took to the field today for a top 15 matchup against the #15 ranked Gorloks of Webster University. Pitching ruled the day on both sides as only one of the five runs scored in the game was earned. CUC was able to take advantage of two Webster errors in the game to win their sixth straight by a score of 4-1.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

  • Almost a year to the day after his last start Adam Gregory was impressive, going five innings while allowing just two hits while striking out five.
  • Noah Dressler picked up his second win of the season by not allowing a run over four innings of work while striking out four.
  • Justin Rodriguez led CUC with two hits on the day.

Gregory and Webster's starting pitcher Sean Beaver worked quickly through the first two innings, sitting the sides down in order.

CUC was able to score first in the third. Mateo Calle led things off by lining a 0-1 pitch into center field for a base hit. A Webster error followed to put two on with no one out. Calle then advanced to third on a passed ball, but the trailing runner Jacob Frank was thrown out on the play. Brayden Benavides brought home Calle with a sac fly to right which made it 1-0 CUC.

Webster brought home the tying run in the bottom half. A walk and hit by pitch opened the inning, and a bunt single loaded the bases with no outs. Gregory was able to get the first out, but a second walk in the inning brought home the tying run. Gregory avoided any further damage by getting a pop fly to short and a ground ball.

Both offenses were silenced until CUC scored again in the eighth. Benavides started the inning off getting hit by a pitch. Two outs later an intentional walk and a second hit by pitch in the inning loaded the bases. Connor Brandon then lifted a fly ball to right that was dropped near the right field foul line. The runners were running hard the whole way which allowed three runs to score on the play to give CUC a 4-1 lead.

Dressler worked in and out of trouble in the eighth before working around a leadoff double in the ninth to secure the sixth straight win for CUC by a score of 4-1.

The Cougars will have an off day Friday before taking on Ramapo College on Saturday afternoon. Opening pitch is set for 2:00pm (ET).
