Buena Vista Opens Spring Break with 8-4 Win over Bethany Lutheran

TUCSON, Ariz. - Buena Vista scored four times in the first inning, got two more big runs in the sixth, and scored six times with two outs in the contest en route to an 8-4 victory over Bethany Lutheran to get its annual spring break trip started off on a solid note.

BVU led 1-0 in the first and then got a two-out singles from junior Tyler Tennyson and sophomore Tyler Stoltzesandwiched around a run-scoring triple by senior Porter Sartor as the team built an early 4-0 advantage.

Stoltze again came through with two outs in the fifth with an RBI double to left center, scoring Tennyson, and givng the team a 5-0 cushion.  

Bethany Lutheran got on the board in the bottom half of the fifth with a two-run homerun that just cleared the fence in right.  Tennyson then got those two runs right back in the sixth when he knocked a single through the left side that scored Bryce Rheault and Renning.

The Vikings again answered with two more runs in the bottom of the sixth but Gage Smart came on in relief of Egan Bonde later in the frame and escaped any further damage.

Henrichs tripled with one out in the eight before Renning brought him home on a sacrifice fly and a late insurance run.

Tennyson finished 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored while Renning went 2-for-4 with the two RBI and two runs scored.  Rheault stole two bases in the contest and finished with one run scored.

Bonde worked the first 5.2 innings and was charged with four runs on eight hits and picks up his first win of the year.  Smart struck out three and walked just one over the final three innings as he notches his third career save and the first for the team this season.

Buena Vista improves to 3-4 on the year and will be back in action on Friday afternoon when it faces Lourdes at 3:00 p.m. (5:00 p.m. CDT).
