Marietta falls to #16 Cortland

MOUNT BERRY, Georgia — No. 16 ranked SUNY Cortland capitalized on three Marietta College defensive miscues as the Red Dragons posted an 8-2 win over the Pioneers Friday (March 15) evening on the campus of Berry College. Marietta falls to 4-5 on the season, while Cortland improves to 7-4-1 overall.

After two scoreless innings, the Red Dragons plated four unearned runs in the top of the third inning. That would be all of the run support Cortland starting pitcher Zack Durant would need.

Durant (2-2) worked 7.0 innings and allowed one run on five hits. He walked two and struck out two. Dan Hobbs threw the final 2.0 innings and allowed one run on four hits with one walk and three strikeouts.

Dalton Wiggins (0-3) started and took the loss for Marietta. Wiggins also threw 7.0 innings and gave up five runs, one earned, on 10 hits. He walked two and struck out five. Brenden Lacorato allowed three runs, two earned, on three hits in 1.0 inning of relief, while Quinn Hecker gave up one hit in 1.0 inning of work.

Marietta got on the board in the fifth inning. Drew Holderbach reached on a two-out single. Damian Yenzi followed with a double to the wall in centerfield scoring Holderbach.

Cortland added a run in the seventh and three more in the top of the eighth pushing its lead to 8-1. Jonathan Pingree smacked an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth for Marietta's other run of the game.

Yenzi finished 2-for-5 with a double and RBI. Holderbach collected two hits in four at bats and scored one run. Mike Hale scored MC's other run, while Pingree was 1-for-4 with an RBI.

Marietta plays Berry College Saturday (March 16) at 1 p.m.
