MOUNT BERRY, GA. – Cortland committed five errors, four of which led to six unearned runs, in an 11-1 loss to Adrian College during the second day of the Berry College Tournament. The Bulldogs (6-1) also outhit Cortland, 12-4, and Jordan Williams allowed only one unearned run over six and a third innings for the victory.
Cortland (7-5-1) will play the host school, Berry, Sunday at approximately 3 p.m., following Adrian's noon matchup with Marietta.
Thomas Miller finished 2-for-4 with three RBI, Gunner Rainey was 2-for-3 with two walks, a hit-by-pitch and two RBI, Zach Zschering went 2-for-5 with two walks and an RBI, and Brandon Cooper finished 2-for-6 with an RBI and two runs for Adrian. Williams allowed three hits and three walks and struck out six for the win. Daniel McMichael gave up one hit over an inning and two thirds of scoreless relief, and Jesse Marks tossed a perfect ninth with one strikeout.
Mitchell Cavanagh (Oneida) started for Cortland and gave up two unearned runs, three hits and two walks in two innings. He struck out two.
Adrian put up two in the second on an error, singles by Korey Mazur and Cooper, the latter driving in a run, an error on a pickoff attempt and a wild pitch. Cortland scored its run in the bottom of the third. Sam Kippen (Lyncourt/Solvay) led off with a single, went to third on a one-out error and scored on Scott Giordano's (Croton-on-Hudson/Croton-Harmon) sac fly to right.
The Bulldogs scored twice in the fourth on two walks, a Zschering bunt single, Miller's sac fly and Rainey's RBI single. Rainey also singled in a run in the sixth to extend the lead to 5-1.
Adrian broke the game open with four runs in the seventh and two in the eighth. The seventh-inning outburst was fueled by two Cortland errors along with a Kevin Cardentey pinch-hit RBI single, a Zschering bases-loaded walk, and sacrifice flies by Miller and Brady Wood. Miller singled home a run and Jason Croci was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring in the runs in the eighth.
Giordano went 1-for-2 with a walk and RBI, Kippen finished 1-for-2 with a run scored, Wyatt Myers (Chittenango) ended 1-for-3 and Anthony Donofrio (Massapequa/St. Anthony's) singled in his lone plate appearance to account for Cortland's hits.
