SUNY Oneonta sweeps doubleheader from Brockport

The SUNY Oneonta baseball team swept their SUNYAC doubleheader against Brockport Saturday afternoon by scores of 5-1 and 8-6.

Game 1

Oneonta (7-7, 2-3 SUNYAC) broke a scoreless tie with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third. James Zupo got the Red Dragons started with a leadoff double to left field. Chris Saitch put Oneonta on the board when he smashed a triple to centerfield, scoring Zupo. An RBI groundout by Mickey Mullins gave Oneonta the 2-0 advantage.  In the bottom of the fifth, the Red Dragons added to their lead when James Zupo scored on an RBI single by Mickey Mullins to make the score 3-0. The Red Dragons padded their lead in the bottom of the sixth when they took advantage of some miscues by the Brockport defense. David Deberardinis got the inning started with a single to left. After he moved over to third one a wild pitch and a Dominic Lamonica sacrifice bunt, an error by the Brockport short stop allowed Deberardinis to scamper home to up the lead to 4-0.  The two teams would exchange runs in the eighth, with Oneonta's coming on an RBI single by Vincent Prisco.

Steven Gerringer was stellar on the mound for the Red Dragons. The junior pitched seven and a third innings, allowing one run with seven strikeouts. Christopher DiDomizio earned his first collegiate save after pitching out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the eighth with Oneonta clinging to a 4-1 lead.  

Game 2
Brockport jumped out to an early lead with a run in the top of the first before Oneonta responded with a three spot in the bottom of the inning. After David Deberardinis began the inning with a bunt single, Dominic Lamonica drove him in with an RBI double into the right centerfield gap to knot the game at 1-1. John Zinko capped off the inning with a two-run home run to right to put the Red Dragons in front 3-1. The Golden Eagles cut their deficit to 3-2 in the top of the second on a Nicholas Pastore RBI single.

The score remained the same until the bottom of the third when Oneonta plated three runs. With the bases load, Dominic Lamonica drove in Chris Saitch with a single to left field to make the score 4-2. John Zinko followed with a two-run double to left, scoring David Deberardinis and Mickey Mullins to increase the Oneonta advantage to 6-2. After Brockport tallied a pair of runs in the top of the sixth, Oneonta scored what proved to be two crucial runs in the bottom of the inning. With runners on first and second with two out, Dominic Lamonica singled to right field, scoring Mike Graves from second. John Zinko followed with an RBI single to right, plating Mickey Mullins to make the score 8-4.

In the top of the seventh, Brockport scored a pair runs on a Matt Van Allen pinch hit single. With the bases loaded and two out, Oneonta senior Ryan Fay earned the save after he was able to get Brockport's Daniel Delgaizo to line out to short to end the game.

Oneonta starter Robert Ottaviano improved his record to 2-1 on the year after allowed two earned runs in six innings of work while striking out seven Golden Eagles.

John Zinko paced the Oneonta offense with a 4-for-7 day with a home run, a double and five RBI.  Mickey Mullins also turned in a 4-for-7 performance with a pair of RBI and two runs scored. Dominic Lamonica finished with three hits, three RBI and two runs scored while David Deberardinis scored three times.

The Red Dragons will try to complete the sweep when they wrap up the series tomorrow at noon.
