FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Southern Vermont College baseball team got itself into the win column Monday afternoon as the Mountaineers began their spring break trip to Florida with a 19-6 victory over Edgewood College at the Lee County Player Development Complex.
SVC scored in each of its first six trips to the plate—cracking it wide open with a crooked six-spot in the fifth to go in front 13-2. The Mountaineers racked up 22 hits on the day, including five doubles, while committing just one error in the field.
Southern Vermont (1-4-1) is scheduled to return to the diamond Tuesday morning with a 9 a.m. doubleheader against St. Joseph's College-Long Island.
Mountaineer senior first baseman Ryan Serrato (Whittier, Calif.) knocked the ball around the park as he went 5-6 with five runs scored and an RBI. Senior third baseman Cody Sullivan (Brunswick, N.Y.) went 4-5 with a walk, six runs batted in, and a run scored while sophomore designated hitter Jason Marcello (Daytona Beach, Fla.) was 3-6 with three RBI's and two runs scored.
SVC senior righty Joe Braim (Saratoga, N.Y.) picked up the win (1-1) from the bump—allowing just two runs (one earned) on five hits and a pair of walks through six innings of work. His six strikeouts were the hurler's most since he chalked up seven against Lesley University on May 2, 2018.
Edgewood went on top with a lone run in the first, but Eagle miscues in the home half of the box allowed SVC to take a lead it wouldn't relinquish. EC made it a 4-2 ballgame in the third when a pickoff to first with the bases loaded allowed the runner from third to score, but that would be the last Eagle run until the ninth.
The Mountaineers scored twice in the third with the help of an RBI-single by senior center fielder Zack Stacey (Saratoga, N.Y.), and the bats then really started to open up in the fifth. Serrato, junior right fielder Kyle Liddy (Oriskany, N.Y.), Sullivan, Marcello, and junior left fielder Nick Santoro (Syracuse, N.Y.) all had run-scoring hits in the box—Sullivan and Marcello's both going for two bags.
Sullivan continued to rake as he tagged another double in sixth, that one being with the bases loaded, before he sent one back up the middle in the eighth to plate Serrato. Marcello then added a two-run double to left-center in SVC's final at bat to cap the Mountaineers' scoring. EC worked four across the plate in the ninth, but the game was never in doubt for Southern Vermont as the squad wrapped up its first win of the year.
