Sewanee Baseball Scores 17, but Fall Short to Hanover in Slugfest

HANOVER, Ind. - The Sewanee baseball team trailed 21-3 after eight innings of play, and the Tigers nearly completed the ultimate comeback. However, the Tigers scored 14 runs in the top half of the ninth as the Panthers of Hanover held on for a 21-17 win on Wednesday in the opener of a two-game, midweek series.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-Things did not look good for Sewanee at the beginning, despite an early run in the top of the first. Chris McNulty brought home Trey Akins home on a base knock.

-The Panthers responded with four runs in the bottom half of the frame.

-In the third, Akins launched his second home run of the season to cut the deficit to 4-2.

-The wheels came off in the fifth for the Tigers defense, as the Panthers sent 21 batters to the plate and scored 15 times on eight hits and four errors by the visitors to take a commanding 19-2 lead.

-After some scoreless frames, the Tigers added a run in the seventh on an RBI single, but the Panthers added two more in the bottom half to lead 21-3.

-Most teams would take this loss and move on, but not Sewanee, whose bats came to life in the ninth inning. The team batted around twice in the frame and scored 14 runs on 11 hits and three walks.

-The contest would end with runners on second and third and a four-run deficit.

SEWANEE KEY STATISTICS
-Riley Brandvold extended his hitting streak to eight games with a 2-for-5 day with two runs scored and runs batted in each.

-Trey Akins missed the cycle by a triple with a career day at the plate, going 5-of-6 with two doubles and a homer, five RBI and four runs scored.

-Chris McNulty went 3-for-5, scoring and driving in a run.

-Will Collins (0-1) started the contest for Sewanee and suffered the loss.

HANOVER KEY STATISTICS
-Mark Walkenhorst recorded a multi-homer game. He finished the day with a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with six RBI.
