Gibbs, Tigers Keep Streak Rolling

More news about: Occidental

LOS ANGELES -- Reid Gibbs continued his outstanding play, upping his hitting streak to 15 games by going 4 for 4 as the Occidental baseball team beat Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 10-0 in seven innings at Anderson Field on Friday.

Gibbs, a senior second baseman from Orinda, hit the ball hard in every at bat, sending line drives to left, center and right field. Once he got on base it might as well have been an extra base hit as he stole a pair of bags and made great reads on a couple balls in the dirt to advance.

Gibbs is hitting .479 on the season which is the best among SCIAC players this season.

Nolan McCarthy, who has been arguably the best SCIAC pitcher so far, had another terrific outing, pitching all seven innings for the complete game victory, with four strikeouts and one walk.

The seven scoreless innings pitched dropped McCarthy's earned run averaged below 1.00 down to a conference-best 0.88.

Oxy center fielder Jack Brancheau homered for the second game in a row in the bottom of the first inning to get Oxy started on track. He's up to a team-best five homers on the season, which is tied for the best total by any SCIAC player so far this season.

Oxy first baseman Jake Fredrickson also crushed the ball, going 3 for 3 with three RBIs and a pair of runs scored. Oxy shortstop Michael Ingram went 2 for 4 with a run scored, and catcher Jared Baur was 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs.

The Tigers blew the game open with a four-run third and then chipped away until getting to the 10-run rule in the seventh.

Oxy played clean baseball in the field again without committing an error.

Just five players reached base for the Stags. Two of them came on a seeing-eye single in the first and a flare off of the hands, putting runners on first and second with one out before McCarthy pitched out of the jam.

Season Impact: Oxy improves to 16-4 overall and 4-0 in SCIAC play.

CMS falls to 7-6-1 and 2-5.

The Tigers and Stags met in a non-conference game earlier this year with Oxy winning 2-0.

Next Game: The Tigers are back in action on Saturday, playing at CMS in a doubleheader. First pitch of Game 1 is scheduled for 11 a.m.
