The SUNY Oneonta baseball team split their non-conference doubleheader against Montclair State Saturday afternoon. Montclair blanked Oneonta 8-0 in game one before the Red Dragons captured the nightcap 4-1.
The Inside Story
Game 1.
Oneonta (9-9) could only muster four hits in the game as Montclair starting pitcher Brian Reiss tossed a complete game. After being held hitless through four and two-thirds innings, Lazaro Moralez broke up the no-hitter with a single to left field. Mike Graves and Dominic Lamonica each had a double in the game while James Zupo rounded out the Red Dragons who collected a hit with a single in the top of the ninth.
Steven Gerringer suffered the loss after allowing three earned runs in seven innings.
Game 2
The Red Dragons were able to take game two of the doubleheader despite only putting together three hits in the game. Oneonta got on the board with a run in the top of the third. After a Mickey Mullins walk, David Deberardinis singled to center to put runners on first on third. With the bats struggling, the Oneonta coaching staff dialed up a double steal as Mickey Mullins scored from third.
Oneonta added to their lead with three runs in the top of the seventh to make the score 4-0. With runners on first and second, Mickey Mullins singled to right centerfield. A bobble by the Montclair outfielder allowed Mike Graves to score as Joseph Canonaco moved up to third and Mullins advanced to second. David Deberardinis then flew out to right, allowing Joseph Canonaco to score with Oneonta's third run of the game. A fielding error by the Montclair pitcher plated Mickey Mullins to make the score 4-0.
Montclair threaten to mount a comeback in the ninth inning, but relief pitcher Christopher DiDomizio was able to induce a game ending double play with the tying run at the plate to secure the 4-1 victory.
Oneonta starter Robert Ottaviano improved his record to 3-1 on the year after allowing just five hits over seven innings while striking out eight.

The Red Dragons return to action on Friday, March 29th when they travel to No. 25 Cortland for a SUNYAC tilt at 3:00 p.m.
