Oglethorpe swept by Berry in doubleheader

More news about: Oglethorpe

The Oglethorpe baseball team suffered a tough day Saturday in Mount Berry, falling to the homestanding Berry Vikings in a pair of games. Berry defeated the Stormy Petrels 8-2 in the first game before turning around and knocking them off 4-3 in the nightcap. With the losses, Oglethorpe dropped to 8-15 on the season overall and 4-4 in SAA play.

The Petrels led 3-2 late in the second game and were looking to salvage a split from the day. They maintained that lead going into the bottom of the seventh and had three outs to get. However, Berry scored a pair of runs in the inning and turned the tables on the Petrels, securing the 4-3 win.

With the game tied 2-2 headed to the fifth, junior designated hitter Jack Bartlewski led off the frame with a double. He then came around to score the go-ahead run on a passed ball, taking a 3-2 lead.

Berry tallied a run in the first to take an early lead but the Petrels responded with two in the third to turn the game in their favor. They put runners on the corners with two outs and Bartlewski came through with a single to right to tie the game. One batter later, senior center fielder Jacob Gassert tallied an infield single to give his team the lead.

Sophomore right-hander Devlin Basinger had an outstanding start, going six innings and allowing a single earned run on two hits and two walks, striking out four. He had to settle for the no-decision, though.

In the opener, the Petrels got single runs in the second and eighth innings off of an RBI double from sophomore catcher Alec Babb and a pinch-hit RBI single from sophomore Ian Wilson, respectively. However, Berry scored single runs in three consecutive innings from the first through the third, then took command of the game with four runs in the fourth, taking a 7-1 lead.

The Petrels will be back in action Sunday when they return to Mount Berry at 2 p.m. for the final game of the series with the Vikings.
