PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – Visiting SUNY Cortland used a couple of big innings late in the game to power its way past the University of Rochester baseball team in a 15-1 victory on Tuesday evening at Towers Field.

The Red Dragons (11-8-1) put up 10 runs total in the sixth and seventh innings combined to blow open a tight 3-1 affair.  Rochester drops to 6-6 on the season with the loss.

UR snaps a five-game winning streak, and was held to just three hits on the day by the Red Dragon pitching staff as Cortland picked up its fourth straight win.

Rochester's starting pitcher was Garrett Renslow and the junior threw well, striking out five Cortland hitters in his three innings of work.  The right hander did take the loss though, giving up three runs (2 earned) in his time on the mound.

For Cortland, Jake Casey picked up the win in relief, tossing four scoreless innings with four strikeouts.  Three other relievers each threw a scoreless frame for the Red Dragons.  Chris Puzakulics got the start and surrendered UR's run.

The visiting Red Dragons were able strike first, getting a two-out RBI single from Dan Schwietzer to open the scoring.

In the second, Renslow looked sharp on the mound, striking out all three Cortland hitters looking in a 1-2-3 frame.  Rochester tied the game in the bottom half when David Rieth drew a bases loaded walk, scoring Drew Bankovich who reached on a throwing error.  Unfortunately for UR, Jack Herman lined a hard shot which was speared by Cortland's third baseman for the final out, stranding three runners on base.

Cortland regained the lead in the third on an error and fielders choice groundout.

UR threatened in the bottom of the inning by getting the first two batters on, but Casey did a masterful job escaping his inherited jam, getting a strike out-throw out double-play and another strikeout to quickly erase the threat.

The Red Dragons exploded for six runs in the sixth, sending 10 hitters to the plate, then added four more in the seventh to make the score 13-1.  In the ninth, Cortland added to more runs to reach the final score.

Cortland's Brian Corporan and Schwietzer each had three hits and three RBI, while Colin BeVard had four RBI and three runs.  Rochester's hits were recorded by Steve Pickering, Aaron Craig and Jacob Matzat.

UR hosts Brockport in its next game on Wednesday afternoon at Towers Field.  First pitch is slated for 4:30 pm.
