WESTFIELD, Mass. -- Senior Colin Dunn (Westfield, MA) lined a base hit through the left side Saturday to give Westfield State a walk-off win in the bottom of the seventh inning in game two, as the Owls swept Worcester State in a MASCAC doubleheader. The Owls won both games at Bud and Jim Hagan Field, the first game 9-1 and the second game 3-2.
Westfield State twice rallied from one-run deficits to set up Dunn's big hit.
Worcester State scored in the second inning on a Kenan Kolanda (Sterling, Mass.) base hit to go up 1-0.
The Owls answered right back in the third inning by a sacrifice fly from Nick Martin (Shrewsbury, Mass.) that scored Sean Moorhouse (Westfield, Mass.), tying the game at 1-1.
In sixth inning when Worcester's Sam Allen (Springfield, MA) laid down a squeeze bunt to score Michael Ferrara (Easton, Mass.) making the score 2-1.
Westfield again answered right back in the bottom of sixth inning by a single by Jake Gibb (Stoughton, MA) scoring Martin to tie the game 2-2.
In the decisive bottom of the seventh, Brett Dooley (Cohassett, Mass.) led off with a base hit for Westfield and was sacrificed to second, and advanced to third on a fly out. Moorhouse walked to put runners on first and third. Dunn followed with the game winning hit through the left side to score Dooley and to win the game for the Owls.
Scott Strachan (2-0) picked up the win for Westfield as he came in for relief in the sixth and seventh. Vincenzo Camera started and gave up just two runs through five innings for the Owls.
Worcester's Sean Mahan (1-1) (Woburn, MA) took the loss. Jake Breton, Kolanda and Ferrara each had a pair of hits for the Lancers.
In the first game, Westfield State starting pitcher John Gegetskas (Windsor, CT) pitched a complete game, striking out eight, and allowing one earned run off on five hits.
Westfield State jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first, by a double from Martin scoring two.
Worcester State got a run back in the second inning after a base hit from Kolanda drove in a run making it, 2-1.
The bats for Westfield came through in with two runs in the fifth inning and four in the sixth inning to put the game out of reach. Moorhouse had a single in the sixth inning to score one run and the second run scored on when Worcester could not complete a play at the plate.
In the sixth inning the Owls tacked on four more runs.
Gegetskas earned his second win of the year, he is now 2-1.
For the Lancers, PJ Walsh (2-2) picked up his second loss of the year, he is now 2-2.
Worcester State is now 7-6 on the year and 0-2 in the MASCAC.
Westfield State improves to 9-4 and 2-0 in conference play.
Westfield is scheduled to host again tomorrow, Sunday March 31st against Springfield College at Bud and Jim Hagan field at 12 noon.
